Chihuahuas are interesting little dogs. I say this not because I’ve owned one in my life, but because my best friend/sister owned one for more than a decade, and the relationship she had with her dog was always a bit mind-blowing to me. This little toy dog never left her side. It sat with her at the table. It had its own place at their table. It was something that really made me wonder. But they are cute dogs, and it’s hard not to love these little animals. So we’ve done all that we could to find out if we can shock and surprise you with some unknown information about the Chihuahua and its little life. Read on to find out.

They Don’t Love Cold Weather

Who does like cold weather? This small breed is not a big fan of cold weather, and you might find that you have a difficult time getting your Chihuahua to go outside when the weather is less than perfect. It’s just something that happens from time to time, and it’s something that you can’t control. The ideal place to raise this breed is in warm weather so that you don’t have to worry so much about a doggie walk in the middle of a snow day. But that does not, and should not, stop people in northern climates from wanting to have a dog like this of their own.

They Have Weak Legs and Knees

It’s not a big secret that this is a small breed, so it should come as no surprise that its small legs and joints and bones might have some health issues. This dog has very weak knees, which is something you might notice affects your dog, but it doesn’t guarantee that it will affect your dog. Just be very careful with this breed to ensure that yours does not develop any health issues associated with this.

They’re not all Short Hair Dogs

Most people are a little surprised when they run into a Chihuahua with long hair, acting like it might not be ‘right’ when the truth is that it’s just fine. Not all of these dogs have long hair and not all of them have short hair. Some are in between, but they are all a bit different. Sure, they’re known for having short hair, but it’s not always the case with this little breed.

They’re Prone to Seizures

This is a dog that does have a large list of genetic issues that might cause some health problems. One of the biggest health concerns associated with this particular breed is the fact that they do have seizures. Not all will have them or experience them at all. Some will experience these regularly and some on occasion. You never know, and there is no way to tell whether or not one will be it or if there will be many more in the dog’s future.

Their Name Comes from a State

The widespread belief is that this particular breed comes from Mexico, and so that’s where the dog got its name.  Named after Chihuahua, Mexico, this is a breed that has some special features, and it is often referred to as a Mexican dog. This, however, could have everything to do with the fact that this is the official dog of Taco Bell, a fast food Mexican restaurant.

No One Knows how they Came to Be

The weird thing is that most animals seem to have a bit of a history. Not this animal, however. It’s said that it’s thought the Chihuahua comes from an ancient fox, but it’s just not really known. This might seem a bit strange to some, but it turns out that there are actually a surprising number of animals in the world that humans are unsure of when it comes to their origins, so it’s not actually strange.

They are Shaky – But it is Okay

Many people notice that this is a breed that shakes a lot, and they wonder if everything is all right. The truth is that his is a shaky breed and there is nothing to worry about. The breed just happens to have some issues that cause it to shake, but they are nothing to worry about if you have a dog that is shaking hard. It won’t happen all the time, and you never really know when it will happen with this breed.

They Are Not Amazing with Kids

We don’t know why they’re not good with kids, just that they’re not known for being the most popular breed for homes with small children. But before you go getting all offended, do know that they are good dogs and many of them do live happily ever after with their children friends despite the fact that it’s been said they will not live happily ever after with kids. They do get along, but some of them just don’t prefer children to adults.

There is No Such Thing as a Teacup

Someone made up this term, and it is not officially recognized. This is a term used to describe the smallest of the smallest of this breed, but no national organization recognizes Chihuahuas as teacup dogs. You can get some that are smaller than others, but you will not find them marked as official. If you come across this term, it’s just a breeder’s way of trying to upsell this particular litter.

They are Officially the Smallest Breed

They might not be considered ‘official’ teacup dogs, but they are officially the smallest recognized breed in the world. They’re typically a lot smaller than most dogs, even when one tends to grow a bit larger than others. There is a standard weight guideline for this breed, and it is important that you do not go about making this dog fat. It has weak knees and it’s prone to a myriad of health issues. You don’t want to go adding to that with too much food and even more health issues, do you?
