10 Things You Didn’t Know About The American Bully

American Bully

The American Bully is such a sweet dog. This is a breed that looks intimidating with its massive head, broad shoulders and muscular body, but this baby doll is just that; a complete baby doll. When our best friends brought home an American Bully puppy over a year ago, we were shocked.

We thought they were mean dogs; aggressive and very difficult to live with. They had a new baby boy in the house, a toddler son, as well, and we privately thought this was a questionable decision on their part.

Over time, however, getting to know Diesel and spending time with him several days a week over the course of his life, we’ve come to realize that this breed is nothing more than a big bundle of love.

This breed is sweet. It’s not aggressive, it’s friendly and it’s really, really good with kids. Never have I experienced so much patience and kindness in a dog with children.

Diesel, our favorite American Bully, will run through the yard and happily chase the big kids as they ride their Power Wheels back and forth, squealing with delight as he runs happily after them and then he will come into the house and find our 18-month-old twins so he can cuddle them.

He’s patient and he loves them, and he’s great. The most dangerous thing about this breed is his forcefully wagging tail – it’ll take a kid down if you’re not careful.

Now that you know this breed is a giant teddy bear, what’s left to know? Well, here are a few things you should know if you are considering this breed as a household pet.

1. These are Happy Dogs

The American Bully is a very happy dog. This dog loves to walk, lay down with the family, sit outside, play with the kids, eat, breathe, stand still, sleep; you name it and this dog is about to do it with as much happiness as you’ve seen a dog do anything over the course of your life. It’s a happy breed, and there is nothing wrong with a dog that has this kind of enthusiasm.

2. American Bullies are Loyal Dogs

When you bring home a dog from this particular breed, be prepared for loyalty. This is a dog that answers to you, does what it can to protect you and lives to please you. This dog does not like when you are disappointed in him and he’s very loyal to you in every way.

3. They’re very Friendly Dogs

Don’t expect the American Bully to behave aggressively toward others. In fact, you should expect that this dog is about to make a new friend. He loves people, loves to be friendly and has no problem making new friends if he can get anyone to overlook his very scary appearance long enough to want to be his friend. He can’t help that he looks terrifying. Remember – don’t judge a book by its cover.

4. They’re very Gentle Dogs

What most people who have a relationship with an American Bully already know is that these are very gentle dogs. I can tell you with certainty that even when our kids are being crazy around this dog, he is very careful to remain gentle. Even when very excited, he seems hyper aware of the fact that he is much larger than our kids and he is sure to keep himself in check so that he doesn’t harm them in any way.

5. Very Tolerant Dogs

You’ve never met a dog that will take abuse like an American Bully. Kid are, by nature, rough. They don’t understand how to be gentle at a certain age, and that’s what makes this dog so great for families. He knows that kids are rough, and he’s tolerant of that.

I’ve seen our favorite American Bully, Diesel, sit on the ground with a look of resigned acceptance on his face as his 2-year-old rides him like a horse without moving a muscle.

6. This is a very Protective Dog

While the American Bully is not aggressive and is actually rather friendly, it will fight to the death if you are threatened. Back this dog into a corner with negative intentions or harm his or her family and you might not live to see tomorrow.

This is a dog that will take a bullet for its family and it will attack anything that is attacking his people – kids or adults. You can see this dog attacking a snake, a coyote, a human with a gun; this is a brave and fearless dog that will do anything to keep you safe.

7. The American Bully Needs an Alpha Owner

Here’s where you have to consider your own personality. If you are not a take charge kind of person, this is not the breed for you. In fact, the American Bully likes to be in charge, so it needs someone that will assert almost immediately that they are in charge so that this dog is not under the mistaken impression that he is in charge. If you are timid, this might not be the breed for you.

8. They’re Easy to Groom

Good news potential dog owners; you do not have to worry about too much in the grooming department with this breed. The American Bully has a very short coat that requires infrequent brushing. It sheds, but not enough to make you feel as if your home is being overrun by dog hair, and it doesn’t need frequent grooming like a Maltese or a Poodle or a breed with longer hair.

9. They Love Exercise

American Bullies are sweet dogs, and they love to exercise. However, they can become very hot very quickly. You should take your dog out every single day for a nice, brisk walk, and let him play in the yard when possible. But, when it’s hot out, have a small pool with cool water your dog can lie in to cool off when he starts to warm up. Safety first, all the time.

10. They’re Generally Healthy Dogs

Many dogs suffer from some breed-specific health issues, but not the American Bully. In fact, this is a dog that has no real health issues unless the breeder that raised your dog was doing it improperly and issuing steroids to the dog to make it look more muscular. Of course, all dogs are just as likely as one another to be diagnosed with health issues, but this one is not more so because of its genetic history.

  1. Ms. Raiford: You MIGHT have begun your article with a history of the breed. This is the first time I’m (a dog person) seeing it. You say nothing of its origins or from which mixture of other breeds it derives. (I’m guessing that it’s a rottweiler / American bulldog mix?? Please enlighten us!

    1. The American Bully is a recently developed breed of dog which was bred to be a companion dog and show version of the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. First appearing in the 1990’s, the American Bully is rapidly increasing in popularity, more so than almost any other rare bred both in the United States and abroad. The American Bully is best known for its tough and intimidating appearance and its friendly but protective nature. American Bullies are not currently recognized by any major canine organization but a few smaller registries have recognized them and there are several breed specific clubs dedicated specifically to them. The American Bully is usually considered to be a type of Pit Bull, referring to the general type collectively known as Bully Breeds, not the specific breed.
