Puppies are hard to deny; they’re cut and they’re cuddly and they’re sweet. That’s the reason so many people love them so. It’s impossible not to want to have a puppy at home, and the Morkie puppies are a special breed. The cross between a Maltese and a yorkie, they’re sweet and they are small. That makes them all the more desirable to potential dog owners. With a small body and a sweet face, this breed is so cute that even the most unlikely dog owners will consider bringing one home. The issue with this, however, is that this is not a breed suited to all families. We say this a lot, but we cannot stress it enough; not all dogs work well with all families. And not all families are capable of owning a dog. Some families just cannot handle the stress, the work and the dedication associated with dog ownership, and that’s all right. Those not cut out for dog ownership are not bad people; in fact, they’re actually very honest and real people. It takes a strong person so say, I like dogs but I can’t have one at this point in my life – or ever.

With that in mind, it’s important that you consider what’s required of you to own a Morkie. It’s not going to be a simple task to own a small dog like this, and there are some things you should consider prior to bringing home a dog like this. Let us help you determine whether or not this is the right breed for you and it will make your decision that much simpler.

Personality Traits are Often Unknown

The thing about the Morkie is that it is a hybrid dog. What this means is that it’s one of the dogs that might take after both or just one of its parents. This means it could be more like a yorkie and less like a Maltese, vice versa, or a good combination of both. It’s impossible to tell until you get a puppy home and watch it develop over time. In fact, it’s a dog that really does require a great deal of time and attention to help develop its personality since you just don’t know what it might do. If you don’t prefer one dog’s personality all that much, it might be a poor choice of dog for you.

They’re Active Dogs

This is a sweet little dog, but it is quite active. It’s the kind of dog that needs to spend some time outdoors playing and being active, and it’s going to need a good bit of exercise. Active dogs like to play, and this is no exception. The Morkie will love a good time playing catch or fetch and it’s going to want to spend some quality time with you. It is, however, a bit of a lap dog as well. It’s going to travel well and want to spend some time with you being close.

They Require a lot of Attention

These are dogs that love people and attention. This means it’s not going to do so well if you ignore it all the time, spend your time away from home and hope that the dog will care for itself and if you are too busy at home to pay any attention to this breed. Go ahead and know that this dog is going to require your attention and if you haven’t the kind of attention to give that this breed needs, it’s not a good match for you.

They Need Frequent Grooming

Morkies have the hair of their parents, which means they need to go to the groomer every few weeks. It’s not really a question of time, either. It’s a necessity thing. This breed has hair that grows quickly and is in need of frequent trimming a brushing. Going too long between grooming appointments can mean that your dog will require an unattractive shave to get rid of all the matting and tangles that are prone to occur in dogs this size. Though you can keep this to a minimum by ensuring that you brush the dog regularly at home.

They’re Small

The bigger side of this dog is around 12 pounds. Any more than that and you risk a dog that has health-related issues due to over eating and obesity. Smaller than this is natural, but you do not want one that is smaller than 4 pounds or you will run the risk of your dog suffering from serious health issues.

They’re not Great for Kids

Kids are good with these small dogs, and these dogs are good for kids. However, it’s not recommended that a dog this small spend time with smaller kids. The reason is that it is so small and even just the smallest and most accidental occurrence can be devastating for the dog. For example, a toddler who accidentally falls over on top of a Morkie will walking might end up causing more damage to the dog than you might imagine thanks to the small nature and build of this dog. It is always better to be safe than it is to be sorry, and that’s why older kids are better suited for Morkie puppies.

It’s a Healthy Dog with Some Breed-Specific Concerns

The Morkie is an overall healthy breed, but there are a few health concerns you should worry about. What you do need to do is look into the Maltese and the yorkie and see what type of health issues these dogs might suffer from. These are the kind of breed-specific health issues your dog might suffer from. We can’t tell you that it is a guarantee because it’s a hybrid dog so its health concerns are split down the middle. It makes them more likely to suffer from breed-specific health issues like its parents, but it also has no more real chance of suffering from health issues than any other dog in the world. So it’s really just a wait and see kind of deal.
