The Pembroke Welsh Corgi: A Truly Royal Dog Breed

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Once used as a herding dog, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a high energy animal.  Due to their intelligence, these dogs are very good at moving flocks of sheep around the pasture. Very low to the ground with short legs, these dogs have a very unique look about them.  One might think that having short legs would make it hard to run quickly. But if you have ever seen one of these dogs in action you will change your mind. Made famous by the British Royal Family, they have kept them at the palace for almost 100 years.  A very popular breed in the United Kingdom, these dogs are now making their way across the pond to the United States.

These Dogs Are Very Loyal Animals and Make Great Family Pets

One of the most loyal of all dog breeds, these animals will follow their owners to the ends of the earth.  No matter what the family is engaged in, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is right in the middle of it.  Very alert animals, they can detect the slightest sound with their fox like ears making them great watch dogs. No intruder stands a chance at sneaking up on one of these dogs.  While they are not overly aggressive, they can be very assertive at time.  If you let one of these dogs go outside make sure to always keep them on a leash because they will chase anything that moves.  Sometimes they have a problem with chasing cars and bikes so never let them roam alone near the highway.

These Dogs Are Sturdy Animals That Will Live a Long Life

If you buy one of these animals make sure you are willing to take care of them for a very long time.  With an average lifespan of 15 years, these dogs can live longer than larger breeds.  When it comes to health issues, most of these dogs will remain healthy all their lives.  But there are some issues that you should watch out for in these dogs.  Sometimes due to poor breeding practices, these canines can suffer from spine related problems.  A condition called Canine degenerative myelopathy will slowly destroy the spine of the dog causing death. Another condition they can have is Von Willebrand disease which affect the way their blood clots.  While both of these conditions are rare, it’s a good idea to have your Vet rule out any of these issues.
