Those Nordic beauties are always so easy to spot, don’t you think? Oh, I’m sorry; we’re not talking about blonde hair, blue-eyed beauties. We’re talking about Samoyed puppies. They’re so cute and sweet and just so easy to spot with their bright white coats and their sweet little faces. It’s not a big mystery that so many households across the country love this breed with its very individual look. There is no mistaking this animal for any other, and that’s because it’s just so clearly the dog that it is. But there are some things that you should know about Samoyed puppies, especially before you get one of your own. For one, you should know that everyone in your house wants a dog and that you’re making this decision as a family and not just as a spur of the moment deal that’s going to surprise the people you want to help you care for the dog at home.

Puppies are a big deal in that they require a lot of work. Some say that having puppies is like having a new baby at home; but it’s not the same. It’s close in that it does take a lot of time and effort, potty training, disciplining and attention. But it’s different in that if your new baby has a potty accident, it’s in a diaper or pull-up. If your puppies have an accident, it’s on your beautiful rugs and carpet. So there are many differences, and you need to understand a few things about this breed before you make the decision to get one of your own. They’re very different dogs than other dogs (as all breeds are) which might make the Samoyed the perfect dog for your family, or the dog that you love to look at but know isn’t right for your home. Before you make the decision to bring one home to your family, you should know a few little things about this breed. These bits and pieces will help you decide whether or not this is the kind of dog you want or the kind of dog better suited for a family with more time.

It’s a Happy Breed

This is one of those things you’re going to love about this breed. It’s a very happy, very good-natured dog that gets along very well with all people. It loves just about everyone and it is quite happy to spend time with the people it loves and cares for, but it’s one that will follow you around and beg for constant attention. This is not a bad thing for dog owners if that’s what they want, but some dog owners prefer a dog that isn’t quite so attention-friendly.

It’s a Working Dog

From a working class background, the Samoyed is a dog that loves to work. It wants a job. It wants to be kept busy and made to feel useful. This is a dog that is going to do very well when it is kept active and busy, and it’s going to be one of those dogs that works very well outside. Be sure you have plenty of time in which to take the dog outside and spend with the dog when you’re out and about so that you can ensure it’s kept happy and healthy.

It’s a Heavy Shedder

One of the most distinct characteristics of this lovely dog is its very thick, very dense coat. It becomes even thicker and denser in the fall, which means it sheds like crazy in the spring. You’re going to want to keep this dog groomed regularly, and you’re going to want to invest in a really good vacuum if you plan on having this as a pet. Otherwise, the dog hair on everything you own is going to make you nuts on a regular basis. A good brushing every morning, however, can help you eliminate a bit of the shedding by capturing it in a brush before it has time to fall all over your furniture and your house.

It’s a Talkative Breed

One of the things that people dislike most about this breed (and some people love this) is that it’s very talkative. When it’s not happy, it will let you know. It makes plenty of talkative noises from barking to whining to bellowing to let you know that things are not as the dog thought they would be or wanted them to be, and it’s just one of those things. You will need a great deal of patience to deal with an upset or put-out Samoyed that wants you to know its opinion on a specific subject.

It’s a Hunting Dog

If you have a big yard with a fence, your dog is going to love that. It’s a dog that loves to hunt, so it’s going to go crazy chasing squirrels and other animals around the yard trying to capture them, but it’s great exercise. The issue is when you are taking the dog for a walk on his leash and he wants to go after other animals and wants to pull you in every which direction. Some firm and positive discipline and training, however, will make it possible for you to tell your dog to stop with simple results.

It’s a Dog that’s Easily Bored

One issue you might have with the Samoyed is that it is a dog that needs a job. It’s a working dog, and it needs to feel as if it is doing something productive. Without this feeling the dog becomes quite bored. When a dog becomes bored, it can become quite destructive. Many Samoyed owners have made reference to the fact that their dogs are very destructive when they become bored, which means that they can tear up furniture, shoes, small items around the house and many other things you might not find very appealing or appropriate. So be sure that this dog either always has a job to do, that it is not left alone too often and that everyone you love is well out of reach of this dog.

  1. It requires a lot of grooming. I had one follow me home when I was in high school. The owners were not brushing it, so I took it on myself to brush that pore dog. When the owner finally came looking for it, they hardly recognized their own dog, and I was really reluctant to let them have it back.
