Fruits and Vegetables that are Toxic to Dogs

Animal Rescue Centres Feel The Strain After Christmas Pets Are Abandoned

By now, we all pretty much know what our four-legged furry friends can and can not eat, especially when it comes to human foods. For the most part, we try to not give our pups human food, but sometimes we just can’t help it. Dogs love food and even when they’re full, they’ll still come running up to us, begging silently (or not so silently) to give them a piece of whatever they are eating. That’s the exact thing I deal with on a daily basis with my dog – a pug – and what many dog owners alike have to go through daily as well. It’s important for everyone to know what exactly is back for our dogs so that it can be avoided.

Here are five fruits and vegetables that are toxic to dogs:

1. Grapes/Raisins

While they are a great treat for us, in dogs they have a different result. Grapes in any form can cause a dog to have kidney failure and damage that is irreversible a mere 24 hours after it’s been eaten.

2. Avocados

If ingested, the dog could experience  very painful oxygen deprivation that would lead to death and problems with the pancreas.

3. Tomatoes

Dogs can’t break down a harmful alkaloid called atropine (tomatine poisoning), which can cause serious problems if eaten.

4. Onions  and Garlic

Both onions and garlic contain compounds that can damage the red blood cells of our pooches if they’ve ingested a significant amount. It can cause serious problems, such as elevated heart and respiratory rates, as well as collapse.

5. Cherries

These sweet red and dark purple fruits are mega delicious to us but dangerous for our furry friends to eat. Unfortunately the plants contain cyanide.
