Pit bulls often get a bad reputation for being violent and dangerous, which is why one town in Louisiana has passed a new law that bans pit bulls and Rottweilers from it. Because of some complaints of attacks that authorities have supposedly received about the two breeds, owning these dogs will become illegal as of December 1st. That means, if you own a pit bull or Rottweiler currently, you will need to find a way to get rid of them come the first of the month. While it may be true that a pit bull and/or Rottweiler in the neighborhood has been known to have previously bit someone before, it can be a problem to have a whole breed banned. Such is the case for O’Hara Owens and her pit bull Zeus: O’Hara suffers from severe neck problems, and Zeus is her helpful therapy dog.
Because of her neck issues, O’Hara must wear a halo brace around her neck and gets around via wheelchair. Ever the kindhearted and helpful dog, Zeus brings comfort to the woman, sensing her discomfort before she even makes a sound. Despite having a sweet pit bull, the family has received a notice, telling them to get rid of Zeus before December, otherwise the canine will be confiscated and they will also be fined. The family has since disputed the ban but to no avail. They argue that Zeus is a sweet dog who has never bit anyone.
Scott Lemoine, who is Chief of Police, has said, “There have been, but I don’t think they’re documented.”
When asked what authorities would do with the dog once they are taken, Lemoine was very cryptic and not answering the question completely. However he did say that if killing the dogs is what the rule was for, it’s what they would do.
