Rescued Pit Bulls Are Now Saving Others As Detection Dogs

The Animal Farm Foundation recognizes that pit bulls are in a precarious situation. They are the dogs most commonly found in shelters, and the dogs that are most commonly not adopted because people have such a fear of these dogs. They’ve allowed the media and the rest of the world to form this thought that pit bulls are aggressive and awful dogs with nothing to offer get to them, and few people adopt them. However, it’s just not the case. It seems that these are dogs that have a serious need for affection, and they are smart.

That’s why the AFF partnered with Universal K9 and Austin Pets Alive to find a place for these dogs. Once rescued, they now look to see if these dogs have any unique and special qualities that might allow them to become a good candidate for a K9 training program. These pits are now being trained in a very amazing class so that they can become police dogs placed throughout the country with police departments in needs. They are learning everything there is to know about police work, from tracking humans to tracking drugs, sniffing out explosives and helping police do their job.

So far the rescue has trained more than seven dogs, and one of them is even so good at his job with his local police department that they are sending her for further training so that she can be used to track missing children. She’s been able to track offenders miles through brush, neighborhoods and farm land to find them hiding out in a barn; she’s a remarkable dog and she is just one of many that are proving that pit bulls are not aggressive mean dogs. They are intelligent, eager to learn and very useful dogs that are natural protective and helpful.
