6 Important Feeding Tips for Puppy Owners

Have you just bought a new puppy or are you thinking about getting a new puppy? Before you do, it’s essential to understand how to feed your puppy properly, so that it grows up to be a strong, healthy dog. Below are some feeding tips that will ensure that this happens.

Choose the Right Food

The food your puppy is given at an early age will determine how healthy it becomes. Unfortunately, the pet foods available today vary in quality. Some inferior, cheaper pet foods contain very few nutrients and minerals, which are required by a growing dog.

Ideally, you should feed your puppy fresh food or pet food that is of a higher quality than many of the options available. Puppies like the odd treat too, so you should find out more about how to choose safe puppy treats from a vet or other animal expert. Ensuring that your puppy eats healthy food will reduce the likelihood of certain illnesses occurring, such as obesity, diabetes, or cancer.

Gradually Introduce Your Puppy to Meat and Other Solid Foods

After about a month, a young puppy should be able to start eating meat and other solid food such as vegetables. However, it’s a good idea to start giving your puppy meat in small quantities first, until they become more accustomed to eating this type of food.

Timing of Meals

It’s important to create a sensible feeding routine for your young pet. It’s recommended that most breeds of dog are fed twice a day and you should try to feed your dog at the same times of the day, every day. Ideally, if you are feeding your dog twice a day, you should feed it once in the morning and once in the evening, depending on the type of puppy you own.

Don’t Overfeed Your Puppy

Unfortunately, some pet owners are too generous when they feed their pets. This generosity can put your puppy’s life in danger because it can eventually develop a wide range of diseases and illnesses that have the potential to reduce your pet’s lifespan and affect its quality of life.

Feed Your Dog Using Clean Bowls

Puppies can be messy eaters, so you should ensure that the bowls they eat from and drink from are always clean. Ideally, after each meal, you should clean your puppy’s food bowls so that bacteria and dirt won’t affect your puppy the next time they eat and drink from these bowls.

Bones and Difficult to Eat Food

Many people give their dogs bones, which is not always a good idea. When a dog eats a bone, it can get chipped into extremely sharp fragments that could choke or damage the inside parts of your puppy. This is a particular problem for smaller dogs that may not be able to chew bones properly, so you should consider some kind of safer alternative for them to chew on such as rawhide bones instead.

When you get a new puppy, you need to become more responsible and ensure that your young dog eats properly. Following the tips above will go a long way towards achieving this important goal for your new pet.
