The Difference Between the AKC, CKC, and UKC Breed Registries

If you are the owner of a pedigree dog, then it is likely that you will have registered your dog with one of the official registering body. Which one you register your pet with will usually depend on your location and the breed of dog. Some of the biggest dog registers are the American Kennel Club, the Canadian Kennel Club, and the United Kennel Club. There are differences between each of these in terms of the registration process, the breed standards of each of the organizations, and the types of events in which they are involved. Here is a little more about each of these breed registries.

The American Kennel Club (AKC)

The AKC is a breed registry for only those purebred dogs that live in the United States and it was founded in 1884. It began when 13 independent clubs joined forces to create a larger club. The main events led by this club are the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the National Dog Show, and the AKC National Championship. The AKC is one of the few kennel clubs from around the world that is not part of the World Canine Organization. The AKC is now the largest registry in the United States and is one of the only not-for-profit registries in the world. To register a dog with the AKC, its parents of the same breed must also be registered with the AKC. There are 202 breeds recognized by this club and these are divided into seven groups; sporting, hound, working, terrier, toy, herding, non-sporting, miscellaneous, and the Foundation Stock Service Program.

The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC)

The CKC is the main dog registry for purebred dogs in Canada and it was founded in 1888. In addition to keeping the breed register, they also organize a number of events, obedience trials, agility competitions and conformation shows. Registration rules at this club specify that the dog is of one recognized breed. All dogs that participate in conformation shows must be registered with the CKC. In accordance with the Animal Pedigree Act, each breed can only register with on breed registry. Therefore, any breeds that are not listed in the CKC must register with either the Working Canine Association of Canada or the Canine Federation of Canada.

The United Kennel Club

The UKC is the second oldest kennel club in the United States as it was founded in 1898. It is also believed to be the largest dog registry in the world. Not only does it have dogs registered from all 50 states of the United States, it also has dog s registered from 25 other countries internationally. Unlike other breed registries that predominantly focus on the appearance of the dog, the UKC has a ‘Total Dog’ ethos, which means it is equally about appearance and performance. The United Kennel Club takes pride in delivering educational events and being a family-oriented organization. THE UKC holds a range of annual events in both the United States and in the other countries that are registered with the UKC.

The Main Differences Between the Breed Registries

The main difference between these three breed registries is that the AKC and the CKC are for dogs from only one country while the UKC is an international breed registry. The second big difference is the way in which they categorize dogs. While the CKC works in line with the Animal Pedigree Act, the AKC and the UKC have both set their own breed standards. A further difference is the registration process. Registration with the AKC depends on the parentage of the dog, while registration with the CKC depends on whether that breed is on the register or with another Canadian breed organization. The UKC, on the other hand, register all breeds of dogs and even have a Performance Listing Program for shelter and mixed breed dogs.

It is also important to remember that there are many similarities between each of these organizations. To all the breed registries, the health and well-being of the dogs are of paramount concern. They also have a shared purpose, which is to track the ancestry of dogs so that sensible breeding decisions can be made to maintain the standards of the breed and optimize health during the breeding process.
