Why Shock Collars Are Not Beneficial

It used to be that shock collars were the ideal way to train your dog.  They would get a little shock here and there if they were barking too loud or crossed into the neighbors yard.  Would you want to be shocked as a way of being scolded? Shocking a dog shouldn’t be placed in the same category as training.  It is not beneficial to constantly have your dog shocked when they are doing something that you don’t permit.  Instead, they need to be trained and practice the rules that you have made for them.  Even though the shock is not severe, it still isn’t an effective way to train your dog.  Shock collar is a name that should actually ring a bell in your head to not buy one.  You are shocking your dog for misbehaving when there are actually other options on the table for you to choose from.

Instead of giving your dog a tiny shock, you should try making them familiar with a sound.  Dog clicker training uses this method which allows the dog to match the sound to a good deed.  Why not use this instead of the shock collar to train your pet NOt to do something.  If they are barking too loud, teach them that two sounds of the clicker means to be quiet.  Using this method instead of the shock collar will be more beneficial.  Your dog might start to live in fear of having a collar on at all and then you will have to deal with that struggle when you try to take them out for a walk.  You also might make them afraid of you.  You do not want your own dog to stray away from the love and affection that they have for you just because of a shock collar!  Having your dog’s trust should mean a lot to you but it could all be taken away if they are scared of you.  They see you put the collar on them and they know that you call the shots.  Your dog will start to put it all together and realize that you are the one shocking them.  That would become an even bigger problem than your dog not liking collars anymore.  Start to show some respect and compassion for your dog and toss that shock collar in the garbage!

It has also been said that dogs can become more aggressive with the use of a shock collar.  The relation to the fast jolting pain they receive once they are shocked triggers them to become a bit angry.  Instead of being afraid they become mean.  If you do not want your dog to become afraid of you or to become aggressive towards you, then you should try different training methods besides the shock collar.  You and your dog will have a much better relationship when they notice that you are trying to help them instead of accidentally hurting them by using the shock collar.
