Boston Terrier vs. French Bulldog: The Great Debate

French bulldog

Boston terrier and French bulldog are close cousins.  They both have the same ancestors, the English bulldog.  Boston terrier is the result when you breed an English bulldog and a white English terrier, and originated in America.  As for the French bulldog, it’s not clear what breed the English bulldog was cross-bred with.  But the American Kennel Club assumes that the dog breed was a result of cross-breeding a toy-sized English bulldog and different small dog breeds in France.  Both dogs have quite a few similarities in their appearances but there are also a few clear distinctions that will help you identify which is which.

Physical Appearance

Both dog breeds got the pug-like face with erect ears like that of a bat and a square-shape head; signature features of their English bulldog forefather.  The facial features are the only features that Bostons and Frenchies have obvious similarities.

When it comes to their body shape and weight, you can simply tell the difference between the two breeds.  Boston Terrier has slimmer and lighter body.  It also has long legs which keeps his body off the ground. With a smaller bone structure, the Bostons’ usual weight is between 15 to 25 lbs.  In contrast, its cousin French bulldog is shorter, heavier, and wider.  They are stubby because of their larger bone structure and short legs and they can weigh up to 28 lbs.

Talking about color, French bulldogs are typically white, fawn or brindle without any spots of markings.  The Bostons’ on the other hand are usually black with white markings on their legs, in between their eyes, on the front part of their chest and across their muzzle.

Both breeds have short and smooth coats which makes them sensitive to heat or cold temperatures.  Frenchies have loose and soft skin that causes them to have wrinkles on their face, neck and shoulders while the Bostons have a tight and firm skin.

Temperament and Energy

French bulldogs and Boston terriers have great temperament.  They are both known for their intelligence, good behavior and loyalty.  They are also very affectionate to people of all ages.  But the two breeds have very different energy levels.

Boston terriers have high-energy level.  They are very athletic canines that love to play and run around.  French bulldogs on the other hand are very laidback.  They don’t have much energy like their Bostons’ cousin but they still need their exercise to prevent obesity.  A short stroll twice a day is a good exercise for French bulldogs and it will help them stay in shape.

Overall, Frenchies are perfect for people who live in an apartment and for adults who has a quiet lifestyle while Bostons are more suitable for families with kids or individuals with an active lifestyle.
