What You Need to Know Before Getting a Tibetan Mastiff

Champion Canines Compete At Annual Westminster Dog Show

The Tibetan Mastiff is a wonderful breed of dog, but this is not just any dog breed. There is much to know about the (frankly, massive) breed that most people don’t bother looking in to. Are you considering getting a Tibetan Mastiff? Is someone you know considering getting a Tibetan Mastiff? If so, here are some things you need to know beforehand. Just some simple facts that will help you understand your new dog better.

First off, let it be known, this dog is huge. I realize this is a given, but this factors more into owning this dog than most know. As you can imagine, this is not a dog meant for apartment living. We also want to point out that you may want to get it a canine companion, as this dog was bred to thrive in packs and has carried that trait.

Another thing worth looking into is price point. As you know, we heavily encourage that people buy all dogs from breeders. Anything else, and you just don’t know what you are getting. The kicker is, a Tibetan Mastiff is a fairly expensive dog. This is not a dog you would buy at a mall with pocket money (and no dog ever should be).

They are also a dog that sometimes has thyroid problems, and this is something you would need to get checked and stay on top of for the dog’s sake.

They are intelligent, but quite stubborn, dogs. This means obedience training is a smart route to go and you may have some problems down the road if you don’t do that early enough in the dog’s life. With a dog of this size and with some of its traits from being wild still predominant, it is essential the owner of the dog lets it be known he is the alpha. Again, this is a pack dog, and if your dog thinks it is the alpha if your house and it is THAT size, you will have some problems.

But all that work aside, they are wonderful dogs who always cause people to turn their heads, and are well worth the time and money needed.
