So keep reading to find out seven things you didn’t know about the Affenshire.

1. Watch dog

Yes, this is a very small dog that you might not even consider as a watch dog. But as small as it is, it is also a great alert dog. This breed does not view itself as small, but much bigger than it is, and more importantly, it has a big heart and aims to protect its home and owners. He will watch out for you and the family and alert you when a stranger is approaching by barking. He is as confident as any watch dog, be it a Doberman, German Shepherd or other large breed. He also makes a great companion and family pet.

2. Personality

Yes, this is a little dog, but he is also very adventurous. He loves to be with you and is willing and able to do what you do, no matter what it is. He wants to be with his owner and participate in everything you do. The fun thing about the Affenshire, is that he is small enough that you can easily tote him with you to many places. You never have to leave him behind when you go out and about. He is also loyal, curious, and yes, sometimes a bit stubborn, but proper training can help him to learn to listen when he wants to expose that stubborn streak.

3. Training

The Affenshire is considered to be easy to train. If you start early, this breed can learn basic commands and will be able to develop good dog behavior for moving on into adulthood. This is also a very emotional dog and he can feel your frustration and anger, so it is never wise to call your dog by name when you are anger. This will hurt him and he will begin to avoid coming when you call. Stay calm and use patience for training.

4. Good with children and pets

Not all small breeds are as accepting of small children or other pets. Many small breeds tend to have a bit of jealousy towards their owners’ attention and do not like competition and can be aggressive or show a jealous streak. The Affenshire is one that is easy going and gets along well with both, children and other animals. Of course you will want to socialize your pup as early as possible in order to get him acclimated to being around the people and situations you want him to learn to live with.

5. May be difficult to housebreak

While some breeds seem to understand the housebreaking concept early and easily, the Affenshire can be a bit difficult to housebreak. This is because it does tend to have a stubborn streak and starting early, along with being firm and patient, are key. Crating your pup when you are not in the same room as him or can take him out to where he is being trained to go, is one of the best ways to help him learn to hold it and prevent him from wandering around the home and urinating when and where he isn’t supposed to.

6. Hypoallergenic

Yes, the Affenshire breed does have longer fur and it is shaggy, but it is still considered a hypoallergenic dog. The Affenshire’s fur is about an inch in length. The hair grows longer on the body, but it is less thick on the face and the legs. There is very little shedding associated with this breed, which makes it a hypoallergenic dog. For those who have issues related to pet dander from excessive shedding, this is one dog breed that may work for you.

7. Make great farm dogs

Do you have a problem with mice or rats? Moles digging up your yard? These little dogs are great dogs to use on big pieces of property because for one, they love to work. They also love to be outdoors and most of all, they love to chase. Like a cat loves a good chase and will go after anything that moves, that is how the Affenshire is. Put an Affenshire on the case to catch that mouse, and he’ll be all over it. He will chase anything that moves and help keep those mice away.
