Abandoned Pit Bull in Parking Lot Becomes Proud K9 Officer

Pit Bull K9

Pit bulls might have a challenging time fighting against the stereotype they have been given over time as being aggressive and not to be trusted. There are however many instances all over the internet of pit bulls doing amazing things and completely going against the stereotype. There are also committed organisations, such as the Universal K9s Detection Dog Program, which rehabilitate dogs and trains them to be police K9s. This is the story of Kiah, who began life as a stray and then, thanks to the K9 program, ended up becoming the first pit bull officer in the state of New York.

Kiah was found abandoned in a grocery store parking lot and was taken in by the Universal K9s Detection Dog Program. She now works with Officer Justin Bruzgul, patrolling the streets of Poughkeepsie and working as a narcotics detection dog. She gets a brilliant reception when she is out on the streets and members of the public love her. She has even become more well known than many of the police officers themselves!

She was trained by Brad Croft who believes that pit bulls make great officer dogs. He says that they are confident and attentive and do not get distracted easily. This is a really useful trait for a police dog. It means that they can set out on a task and not get distracted until they have completed the mission. This is especially vital for things like drugs raids.

There is still quite a long way to go when it comes to changing people’s perceptions of pit bulls but hopefully in time, as more dogs graduate through the Universal K9s program, and others like it, more people will see how brilliant these dogs can be. They certainly deserve a better reputation. Kiah is at the forefront of doing brilliant things for her breed. She is an example that can hopefully be followed and lost of people can see her in this way. In a few years time, who knows, the pit bull might be revered as a standard and brilliant police service dog.
