Cats aren’t the only animals that curiosity has gotten the best of! Felines are often the animals associated with chasing birds – after all, that’s often how it’s been displayed throughout history and pop culture. Apparently cats aren’t the only ones who have gotten into trouble for chasing birds – one bird chasing dog actually found herself in a bit of a pickle recently. Firefighters needed to help out Moxie, a curious pup from Sandwich, Massachusetts, who got a little too carried away after seeing a bird while on a walk on the marina, chasing the gulls, only to end up getting washed away by fast-moving water.
The Sandwich Fire Department received a frantic call from Libby Smith, Moxie’s owner, after the female terrier mix fell into the Cape Cod Canal last week. On October 5, the couple were walking their daughter’s dog when the 3-year-old pup ended up chasing a flock of seagulls into the water near the Sandwich Marina. Moxie wasn’t prepared for such a strong current and was unable to swim through it when her owners had to call for help. The fire officials received the call at 9:27 a.m. and swiftly acted, launching a boat just seven minutes later at 9:34 a.m. with firefighters aboard to help save the dog, and by 9:36 a.m. they had the dog onboard.
“They were awesome,” Libby Smith told the local news. “Luckily we were not too far from them. She was in there at least 20 minutes. So luckily they were pretty close by and they got her before she got tired out.”
The dog was a bit cold from the morning water and scared, but was overall in good health. Needless to say, dear Moxie will no longer be running around on her own without a leash for her safety! She has also hopefully learned not to chase birds into the water.
