There are stray dogs, feral dogs and dogs without homes all over the world, so you might wonder what Adopt a Golden Atlanta is doing rescuing Golden Retrievers from Turkey and Istanbul when there is such an issue with them not having homes here. There is a disturbing fad going on in the country, and it’s one that Adopt a Golden Atlanta wants to remedy. Where in America there are waiting lists for families looking to adopt a Golden Retriever with their wonderful, calm temperaments and loving personalities, there are an estimated 4,000 homeless Golden Retrievers in Turkey and Istanbul. The people there have taken to doing something you can only consider just awful, and it’s kind of disturbing. They have taken to buying their kids Golden Retriever puppies and taking them along on their beach vacations to entertain the kids.
Then they leave them behind because they don’t want a dog at home. They just want a dog to play with the kids on vacation, and it’s horrible. When the rescue heard about this, they immediately knew they had to do something. Last year alone they saved 36 stray Goldens from the area, and they are working this year to save more. These are not dogs equipped to live on the streets. They don’t have the personality or the survival skills for it, and they need loving homes. Right now, the operation wants to save as many as possible and they are looking for help both financially and in terms of foster care for the dogs that need new homes.
