How to Deal With a Difficult Dog

difficult behavior with dog

Your dog won’t sit.  Your dog won’t stay.  They don’t want to eat.  They don’t want to play.  Does this rhyme sound like something you would come up with to describe your life with your dog right now?  Your dog just won’t do anything you want them to.  Sure, they grab their leash and sit at the door when they want to go out.  That’s great.  However,  when you want to take them out even if they don’t have to go to the bathroom, it becomes a big production.  You can’t get them to move off of the couch.  Once you get the leash on, you have to push their butt out of the door just to get them outside of your house.  When is this bratty attitude going to stop?  I’m not talking about training your dog to do certain things.  Your dog already knows how to rollover, not chew on shoes, and eat their food in the kitchen.  For some reason they are just rebelling against the tricks and rules that you have taught them.  Dealing with a difficult dog is hard, but you must be patient.  There are a few ways that you can handle certain situations with the smallest solutions.

Your dog is trained to go to the door when they want to go outside but they are always difficult when you actually want to take them out for a long walk.  Get your dog motivated to get off of the couch.  Find ways to make them see that going for a walk when they don’t have to go to the bathroom is actually fun.  Giving them a small treat will always do the trick.  Once you start to see a difference in their attitude about going outside, slowly start to let go of the treat rule.  Try not to omit the rule but just make sure you aren’t giving them a treat every time.  They will start to understand that you will give them a treat for going outside; they just won’t know when it will be!  That might sound like it is sneaky and slightly cruel, but you have to get your pup out of the house and walking!  Same thing goes for the tricks that your dog knows.  Sometimes dogs are just stubborn and won’t sit when they actually know how to.  Try and play a game with them that they like first and then try your tricks out after.  Running around the house seems to be a favorite of dogs.  See how long you guys can chase each other or play tug of war until you are worn out.  After you are semi-exhausted, throw out a few commands for your dog to sit or lay.  They will be tired enough that they actually might do what you say.  You should give them a treat when they do what you want.  Treats always indicate that they did something good and they also become satisfied.  You can never go wrong with throwing your dog a little snack for getting rid of their difficult behavior.
