Local Cops Adopt Pit Bulls for K9 Unit

Pit Bull and Cop

I say “congrats” to the cops in this news story at the police department that killed two birds with one stone by turning often-maligned pit bulls into police dogs. Not only are they doing a great humanitarian deed, but they’re also solving a dilemma that the department was suffering from. They just couldn’t afford police dogs since they can cost between $10,000 and $15,000 to purchase a trained GSD or a Belgian as a police dog. But, these cops came up with another idea and it was ingenious.

They adopted shelter dogs, but not just any shelter dogs. They adopted pit bulls to serve with them in their department. And now, apparently, other police departments all over the country are following suit. It’s such a shame that pit bulls have become the victims of legislation that could ban them from some communities. Pit bulls have long been stuck with an erroneous label that said they were mean, evil and downright dangerous. But, that’s simply not true.

They are smart, loving and highly trainable, making them perfect police dogs. What’s even more significant is the fact that these dogs could have had a far different fate if they hadn’t become police dogs. They could have been euthanized as so many dogs are every day in this country.

Now, instead, they have excellent homes with their fellow officers and life is good. And, kudos as well to Animal Farm Foundation, Austin Pets Alive!, and Universal K9 for their assistance with training the pit bulls so that they can become official police canines.

And, the pictures in this article are just adorable, too. I loved looking at every single one of them. But, my all-time favorite is the one that shows the pit bull suited up in Kevlar and ready to go to work. And, best of all, he’s the lead dog!
