New Bill Might Make it Illegal for Landlords to Discriminate Against Renter’s Dogs

Having never personally been a renter myself, I was not actually aware that landlords had the power to turn down a couple for having a specific breed of dog. I know that many renters will tell you that they don’t want any animals in their home while you rent, but I simply did not know that they could say that your dog is not the kind that they prefer and refuse to rent to you if you have a specific breed. It is unfortunate, but it does happen. However, New York City landlords might have to change their ways in the near future. A new bill is on the way to being voted on, and it might make it pretty difficult for those landlords to discriminate against the people who have dogs.

The new bill will allow anyone with any kind of dog to rent an apartment and landlords cannot be particular about it. They can still tell you that they don’t want any pets in their apartment, but it is now illegal for them to tell you that they cannot rent to you for some reason or another when it’s really because you have a pit bull or one of the other breeds that are so frequently discriminated against in the real world.  We don’t know when the bill is being voted on, or how it will turn out. However, we do know that there are a lot of dog owners very excited about the prospect of having a dog that is no longer discriminated against when it’s time to find a place to live in such a world where certain dogs are loved less than others.
