In yet another win for the Pit Bull community, Montreal has announced that they will be suspending their Pit Bull ban indefinitely. For those that know about Montreal they’ve had a very controversial “ban” on the breed for some time now. The ruling was met with uproar both in Canada and in the U.S., with pit bull advocates, rescue organizations, and regular dog lovers decrying the law as inhumane.
What made the change? The law was passed after a woman was attacked by a dog that was misidentified as a pit bull, but really was a boxer with a history of aggression. Pit Bulls have been facing bad labels primarily because they are the face of dog fighting rings and have developed a reputation for being overly aggressive animals. While there are certainly cases of Pit Bulls related to violent offenses against humans, there’s an unfair stigma to the rest of Pit Bulls who are otherwise safe animals.
In fact if you’ve ever known someone to be a Pit Bull owner they’ll more than likely tell you Pit Bulls are one of the sweetest and loyal animals you could ever care for. The Montreal SPCA managed to convince the city to suspend the ban throughout their legal challenge. No one knows how long the SPCA’s case against the law will go on, but that means for that time, at the very least, the pit bulls of Montreal will be safe. Let’s keep these laws spreading!
