It’s been a tough transition for many students going back to Sandy Hook elementary. But thankfully dogs are becoming a big part of easing that transition. Take Emma Wishneski for example. She first met Jeffrey, a 73 lb Pit Bull Terrier back in December when the dog’s owner brought Jeffrey to a Christmas party for Emma’s classmates just weeks after the shootings.
Emma happened to be late for school that day and missed the horrific tragedy. While Emma didn’t witness it all firsthand she lost friends and teachers in the shooting. In the wake of that shock, meeting Jeffrey had an immediate impact on Emma. The two quickly formed a bond at the Christmas party, and she stayed with him throughout the entire event.
The day after the Christmas party Emma asked if she could see Jeffrey again so her mother reached out to owner Michele Houston to arrange the first of many play dates. Only two years ago Jeffrey was nearly euthanized after being one of many NYC shelter dogs. But today? Today, Jeffrey — the “Positively Peaceful Pit Bull,” as he is known — has more than 700 Facebook fans and a full schedule of therapy visits in the tri-state area.
Just this week Emma brought in a stuffed toy animal of a pit bull to remind her of Jeffrey as she eases her transition back to school. Story via
