Top Ten Fluffiest Dog Breeds

Who doesn’t like a fluffy dog? There is just something extra adorable about a little (or giant sized) fur ball jumping all around you in excitement.  Fluffy dogs tend to look extra cute, like they were drawn by Disney and came to life when some kid made a birthday wish on a candle. We decided to check out all the fluffy breeds of dogs, and make you a list of the fluffiest.  Keep in mind these are presented in no particular order. They are all number one to us. Also, fluffy’s definition can vary greatly here. As some dogs are listen because of their fluffy appearance, and some dogs listed because of their amount of fur and the amount of coats. Okay, on to the ten fluffiest dog breeds!

Chow Chow: We always have an in office debate about what breeds we should use as a lead in pic for articles like this, and which dog breed we should start off with. Then we remember the list is not presented in chronological order, and we laugh that was just wasted an hour debating a non-issue. Then your boss gets mad, and we work twice as hard for two hours. That process out of the way, the Chow Chow was the definite first dog we decided to list.  Simply because, well, look at it! Just beware of shedding season. The Chow sheds quite a bit of fluff when it’s shedding season.

Newfoundland: Though not fluffy in the conventional sense, it’s unique double coat is what places it on the list. Though you may think of the next dog on the list when you think of fluffiest breeds, the Newfoudland is fluffy, too.  Just fluffy in a different way. Also, maintenance of that coat is said to be a lot of work.

Pomeranian: Ah, we gave this guy the lead in photo for being so well known when people think of fluffiest breeds. The Pomeranian is just a charismatic little ball of fluff. While the fur may not be as curly as some of the other fluffy breeds, this might just the most popular of all the fluffiest breeds for how much personality comes in such a small, fluffy package.

Maltese: A bit smaller in size then some of these other breeds, the Maltese may not have a lot of hair, but you will notice, that hair is fluffy. Add the fluffiness to the already cute factor of this loving dog, and you have a fluffy breed well worth spending some time with.  Maltese are also known for getting along well with cats. That may sound strange, but a fluffy dog that gets along with your hairy cat sounds like a happy home to me.

Poodle: Ah, the king (or queen) of the fluffiest dogs. While some dogs may have lots of hair, and lots of coats, which makes them fluffy. The Poodle just had that naturally fluffy hair that makes it the front runner when people think about fluffy dogs.  Labradoodles and some other mixes even more so. A much more low maintenance dog when it comes to their coats some of the other dogs on the list.

Old English Sheepdog: They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and if the you look at the above pic and “fluffy” is not one of the 1000 words that comes to mind, something might be wrong with you. Their fluffy coats can be rather tough to maintain, though, so be forewarned. Also, they LOVE being outside and playing, which can lead to things like leaves and sticks getting caught in the fluffy hair. So just pay extra attention to that aspect if the ENglish Sheepdog is the breed for you.

Shih Tzu: Perhaps a little less fluffy then the next entry on the list, this breed is still pretty fluffy. Very active and playful, their coat may need a little more attention, but they are worth. That’s one of the great things about a Shih Tzu. They know they are worth it and will remind you every single day.

Bichon Frise: So fluffy they often look like runaway clouds. Just look at the above picture to drive this idea home. The Bichon Frise is a fluffy, cheerful companion for anyone to have. But seriously, they look sort of like cotton balls that became animals. That only makes them even cuter to us, though. And that is just why they landed on the fluffiest dogs list!

Keeshond: We are really happy to get this (lesser-known) breed out there. The Keeshond, as you can see, are known for their inherent fluffiness, as well as the males having a “mane” around their neck. They are also surprisingly low maintenance dog for a dog this fluffy. Two brushings of the coat a week can do the trick.

Bearded Collie: The shaggy, waterproof double coat of this dog really gives it that “fluffy” look, especially if you get them outside during really humid weather. Though usually combed flat and with straight hair, the Bearded Collie is still fluffy. Just not as visibly fluffy as some of the other dogs populating this list.

Samoyed: The first thing that makes the Samoyed so fluffy is that it has a thick double coat. They all also have a ruff around the shoulders and head, adding to their apparent fluffiness and making them the perfect breed to round out the list of fluffiest dogs.

So what breeds did we miss? Take to the comments and let us know. Just don’t say American Eskimo because we know, we just couldn’t find a good (licensed) picture of that breed. Same can be said for The Japanese Spitz.
