A Trick That Makes Washing Dogs Easier

Champion Canines Compete At Annual Westminster Dog Show

We will admit it. Even as avid dog lovers, sometimes bath time for a dog can be tough. There are multiple methods of dog washing, and some, admittedly are better than others. If the weather is good, you really can’t beat an outdoor washing. But let’s say it is the dead of Winter and you need to get your dog clean, even though you know it hates the tub? Well, there is stuff you can do to make the experience of washing dogs easier on both you and the dog.

First thing, pre-expose the dog to water. Do this with ponds or even oceans (where beaches allow dogs) and let the dog have some fun. Play catch with it in shallow water, and let the dog see YOU swimming around and enjoying it. You can work that over time, getting the dog more and more accustomed to the water. A good way to subconsciously train them is say “wanna go to the beach” before you guys go in water together. Do this over time, and saying “wanna go to the beach” will evoke a feeling of excitement for the water, and not dread.

Now, you can adapt by saying that same expression before you need the dog to take a bath. At first, the dog might see through your ruse, but this involves some acting, too. They need to see YOU get excited about the tub. Splash a little and maybe dunk your arms and then shake them  around, laughing. The tub looks very different from the beach, but once the dog makes the connection how similar the two are, you can condition your dog to get as excited about bath time in Winter as it does about going to the beach in Summer.

The idea is the same way you do things with children. If you are happy and excited about something, they will be, too.
