Woman is Reunited with Her Lost Dog After Two Years

A 79 year old woman Adeline Cruz never thought she’d see her dog again after her Shih-Tzu Pekingese named Smuth went missing two years ago.   However, Cruz received a call that was given to a rescue group last March.  The dog was found by a meter reader who gave the dog to a resident.   The rescue had the dog cleaned, spayed as well has had a small growth on her removed.   The total costs for the work was $289.

This is where the story takes a turn.  The rescue group wanted the money from Cruz at which point Cruz called the police.  Since Cruz didn’t authorize the spaying and vet work, she wasn’t liable for the costs. Detectives spoke to the group and explained the law. They agreed to return Smuth, and Cruz agreed to make a donation to the rescue.

“It was very gratifying to be involved like this,” said Det. Samer Issa, of the LAPD’s Mission Detective Division. “It was more like returning a lost child than lost property, and everybody was happy, especially Smuth,” he said.

Thursday was Cruz’s birthday, and she said getting Smuth back “was the best present ever,” police said.  Still though.  Cruz is a retired teacher, hadn’t seen her dog for over 2 years and wouldn’t take the dog back if she had to pay for the vet bill?  I could understand if it were in the thousands but these just seemed weird.

I guess congrats on getting your dog back but still…..
