20 Dog Breeds That are the Biggest Couch Potatoes
Some dogs would rather take a nap alongside you on the couch than chase the mailman through the yard – something your mailman appreciates very much. The common misconception is that dogs are just very active animals that love to run, jump, play and have a good time all the time, but it’s simply not true of all dog breeds.
Sure, there are many breeds that do love an active lifestyle, but there are also a few breeds that are just as happy to sit around in its pajamas and binge watch Netflix with you throughout the day. Sound like the kind of dog you can get along with? Find out which dogs do not want to make you move off the couch too often to exercise with them.
1. Shih Tzu
Do not expect this adorable breed to do much in your home. He’s not going to guard the house, alert you to intruders or beg for long walks on the beach with someone special.
He’s just going to ask that you sit down so he can get comfortable in your lap. A highly affectionate breed, this is a lap dog in every sense of the word. I’d recommend this dog for an older person who is unable to get up and around as easily as he or she might have in the past.
2. Bullmastiff
I know, I know; this huge dog looks more like the kind of dog that wants to go to the gym and workout for half the day. He’s not, and that’s all right. Some people prefer a large dog that will scare off anyone with less than ideal intentions, and they still don’t want to get up and do a lot of work in the exercise and activity department. If that person is you, meet your new dog.
3. Havanese
This little dog is sweet, and lazy. It does love a walk or a trip to the park when you are up for it but if you just want to hang out at home all day long, this breed is also perfectly happy to do just that. It’s a sweet dog that doesn’t cause much in the way of noise or activity in the home, and it’s very good with kids. It’s a lovely lap dog for anyone looking for one.
4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
We love a dog that has such a big and vibrant personality, and we really think that you, too, will love this dog. It’s one that has such a sweet disposition and such a silly nature, but it prefers both from its seat on your lap. That makes it a pretty big couch potato, and there is nothing wrong with that. Just be sure not to overfeed this lazy dog.
5. Bichon Frise
This darling dog is a small one, so it’s perfect for your lap. It’s also a pretty lazy dog that might have a sudden burst of energy every once in a while that inspires it to get up and get moving, but it’s really just a dog that wants to relax with you. It’s perfectly sized to fit on your lap during those Netflix sessions, too.
6. Saint Bernard
Big, bold and beautiful, this is a dog that was once portrayed in a movie about a St. Bernard that was active and in trouble all the time, and that could not be further from the truth. This lovely dog is one that prefers to spend time being home, lounging and relaxing. It’s not an overly active dog, thought it does require moderate exercise and will appreciate a walk every day.
7. Tibetan Spaniel
Admittedly, I’d not heard of this breed until know. However, it’s cute and it likes to spend time cuddling, so that automatically makes it a dog that I’d probably enjoy. He’s a distant relative of the also lazy Lhasa Apso, and his main goal in life is to protect your home from intruders. If those intruders come at your couch, that is. He’s lazy, so he will let you know if someone is in the house, but that’s about it.
8. Shar Pei
These Chinese dogs are not hard workers. They really don’t want to do any work, in fact. This breed would much rather sit around and relax than do anything else. You’re not going to worry that it’s going to bark at anyone passing by because it’s too lazy to even get up and look to see if anyone is passing by. It loves warmth, so this dog is looking for a home with a fireplace for it to lie down and enjoy.
9. Pug
Everyone loves a pug. Seriously, what is not to love about a face that looks like this one? It’s sweet and it’s adorable, and it’s so much fun to watch. However, that’s all you’ll be doing. This is a dog that almost looks annoyed when you ask him if he wants to go for a walk. Be careful you do not let this one eat too much, either, or he will end up too fat to really move – and that would probably be all right with him.
10. Pekingese
Every time I see one of these dogs, I’m momentarily reminded of something I cannot quite put my fingers on. It’s a strange looking dog in my opinion, but I know that it is the quintessential lap dog with a love of laziness and a happy place on your lap. This is the perfect companion dog for an elderly person who is mostly limited to spending time at home without much activity in his or her life.
11. Skye Terrier
Like any terrier breed, this is one that is easily excitable if there is a cat to chase or a hole to dig, but that’s about it. Otherwise, his main goal in life is to sit around and do little more than examine the back of his eyelids to ensure that they’re looking as good as they were an hour ago, which they probably are. Lazy and happy to be, this is a good dog for someone who doesn’t love activity.
12. English Bulldog
This darling is cute as a button and sweet as can be, but he’s lazy. He’s so lazy he’s not even going to want to get up and move around sometimes. I remember once seeing his dog as it was standing in at a Georgia Game as the mascot not even move an inch all four quarters (Not that Georgia is any good these days). This is a dog that loves to relax, and he probably wants an owner who also loves to relax.
13. French Bulldog
This is a cute dog, it really is. It’s very charming and very sweet, but it’s also very lazy. The French Bulldog is of the opinion that days should be spent doing as little productive work as possible and as much relaxing as possible. They’ll get up and go on a walk with you, but they don’t want to go far and they’re not doing anything to inspire you to get up and get moving when it comes to living an active lifestyle.
14. Bulldog
They look so boxy and intimidating, as if they spend all day in the gym working on their muscles. However, bulldogs are actually among the laziest of dogs, and that’s just a fact. If you are the laziest person around, this is the dog for you since he wants nothing more than to be lazy with you. Sometimes the look this dog gives when it’s time to get up and go to the bathroom is just annoyed.
15. Lhasa Apso
What we love about this small breed is not that it is adorable, which it is; it’s that it’s a watch dog through and through. It’s not going to want to spend hours romping in the yard or taking long walks or exercising. It wants to lie down and relax, but it will do that by the door so that you can sit down and relax, enjoy and spend some quality time with this dog as it alerts you to the presence of unknown persons.
16. Chow Chow
These are dogs that do have a lot to take into consideration. By and far, they are known as dogs that do not do particularly well with kids. They’re known for being slightly aggressive and not all that kind to strangers, and that’s fine. They’re great for singles and those who love to spend time at home – not getting up off the couch. This dog might not love people, but it really doesn’t love people that want it to move.
17. Chihuahua
He will bark your ears off if he senses someone is coming, but he will pretty much lie back down and not bat an eye otherwise. This is not a dog that is overly active, and he is one that is pretty good with anyone. He might not always want people around other than the person he loves the most, but really, who does? This is a good dog for someone who is a little lazy and not all that interested in walking the dog.
18. Keeshond
If you are an apartment dweller without much energy, so is this barge dog. It really is good for those who aren’t sure what type of dog they want since it is one that adapts to the lifestyle of its family. If you are lazy, it will be lazy. If you prefer a little more activity, it prefers a little more activity. Basically, you can turn this dog into a small lap dog or a big, mean watch dog. It’s up to you.
19. Greyhound
No one assumes this is a lazy breed. It is; even though it’s a racing dog that works very hard much of the time, it would rather lie on the couch and binge watch Netflix with you. This is a very lazy breed, and it’s one that you will find works well in almost any home. Friendly and sweet, it’s not going to cause you any trouble, and it’s happy to spend the entire day at home. You won’t worry about rainy days making this breed crazy.
20. Newfoundland
These are known as gentle giants because despite their huge and impressive size, they’re actually very gentle and very lazy dogs. They do require exercise to keep them fit and healthy, but they’re happy if you want to skip out on exercise every so often. They’re very lazy dogs that love to lie around and do very little in terms of productive business, and that’s largely all right with many people.
