Is the Miniature Schnauzer Right for You?

miniature schnauzer

There are three schnauzer breeds, according to the American Kennel Club, but the miniature schnauzer is the most popular of the bunch. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that this adorable little dog is so cute, so lively and so much fun to have around. For that reason, many people choose to adopt or buy a dog in this family and most do not regret it. Of course, some people do regret their decision to get this dog, but it’s not the dog’s fault. The reason some people regret their decision is through their own fault. They do not do the proper research to learn more about a breed before deciding it’s the breed they need at home. Many people make the decision to get a dog just because it’s cute or adorable, or because it looks like the kind of dog that they will love forever.

The truth is that all dogs are lovable when they are in the right home but if you choose a breed that is not right for you, you’re going to end up regretting it all together. What do we mean? Well, we mean that you are not going to be able to handle a dog that is not right for your family. Depending on its needs, your lifestyle and what it takes to raise a certain dog, you might find that it’s too much for you. We certainly do not want that to happen to you and your miniature schnauzer, which is why we’re going to tell you all you need to know about this breed before you get one home. If you feel that this is still the right breed for your family after reading this information, welcome that new pup right into your lives. Otherwise, there are plenty of other breeds out there that might be a better fit for your family that you should consider.

They’re Friendly Dogs

This is what people love about the miniature schnauzer; it’s just a friendly little dog. It doesn’t get very big, so you don’t have to worry about it outgrowing your home, and it will always love you. Many homeowners want a dog that is welcoming of their guests rather than suspicious of everyone that comes through the door. If you’re that type of homeowner, this is the breed for you.

They’re Smart Dogs

What is so wonderful about this particular breed is the fact that it is such a smart dog. This makes the dog very easy to train and very easy to live with. The only issue you might have with a smart dog like this is the fact that it will learn very quickly what it can and cannot get away with, so please make sure you are firm and patient, consistent and always enforce the rules. A smart dog will know when you’re not going to enforce rules, and he or she will use that to their advantage.

They’re Obedient Dogs

Obedient dogs make for great companions. This is a dog that will, once taught, follow instructions carefully. This makes this dog a great travel companion, too. If you are on the road or you fly often, you will find that this particular breed is a good one to take with you. It’s not a good idea to take this dog to the kennel or leave it home often without companionship.

They’re Lively Dogs

This little darling is happy to crawl into your lap and lie down for a rest, but it’s an active dog. It’s a bit more than just a lap dog, which is a bit of a dealbreaker for many older dog owners who haven’t the time, energy and ability to take this dog on a long walk each day, and that’s what it requires. It wants to spend some time in the yard and it wants to enjoy life to the fullest. That’s what makes this dog so wonderful, but it does need an owner and a family that enjoys being active and playing.

They’re Attached Dogs

If you travel a lot and want a dog that will be content to stay home with a dog walker a few times a day, this is not the breed for you. While it’s a very adaptable dog, which is good, it’s one that needs to be close to you as often as possible. Otherwise this dog is one that will end up lonely and upset, and upset dogs can get themselves into a spot of trouble. You’ll want to consider this breed only if you are home more than you are not.

They’re Adaptable Dogs

If you more a lot, you won’t find that this dog has any problem with that. As long as you are nearby, the dog doesn’t care where he or she is. It can make itself at home anywhere you go, which is good for homeowners with multiple homes across the world or just a love of travel and the desire to have the dog accompany them on trips.

They’re Not Watchdogs

Anyone in the market for a watchdog will be greatly disappointed in the watchdog abilities of this particular breed. A watchdog it is not. It might let you know when something is happen or it sees someone, but it’s going to be their friend before anything else, which makes it a fairly useless protector. It does love its family, but it’s so friendly and trusting that it loves all people regardless of their intentions.

They Don’t Shed as Much as you Might Think

Since these dogs have ample fur, many people make the decision to ignore it as a possible pet since they assume it must shed a lot. The good news is that this breed does not, in fact, shed as much as you might think. It does need frequent brushing, and a trip to the groomer is necessary every few weeks. But you will not spend your days vacuuming up dog hair from every surface in your home. It’s just not how this dog rolls.
