Life Expectancy and Expectations
The standard poodle is a dog that is expected to live around 15 years. Of course, this all depends on the dog. Some are diagnosed with health issues and do not live as long, and some are just not going to live that long. Others might life longer. However, this is an average lifespan for the standard poodle. As a full grown adult, this dog is still not going to be very large. Standing anywhere from 14 to 18 inches tall.

These dogs love to be outside, and they are huge fans of hiking and swimming. However, it is important that you train your standard poodle to enjoy water rather than just assuming that because it’s a good swimmer it will love to spend time in the water.
Standard Poodle Health Issues
The standard poodle is not without its own set of health issues. A generally healthy dog, there are some that are prone to some health issues that might make it a little bit more complicated to own. For example, many standard poodles are known to suffer from the following:
- Addison’s disease
- Gastric dilatation volvulus
- Thryroid issues
- Tracheal collapse
- Sebaceous adenitis
- Epilepsy
- Juvenile renal disease
- Hip dysplasia
- Cancer
Ear infections are also common irritations that standard poodles face, but they’re easily treated and very minimal. Because poodles are hypoallergenic and they have a nonshedding coat that tends to grow within the ear, infections are more likely to happen. It’s a good idea to keep this dog’s ears clean at all times to prevent ear infection from occurring so that your dog is as healthy as possible.
It is a good idea to ensure your standard poodle is fixed unless you want to welcome several large litters should your dog get out or mate with another pet. The standard litter size for a standard poodle is approximately 7 puppies, which is a high number.
Breed History
