The Best Tips on Dealing With Dog Eye Discharge

There are a number of reasons why your dog might be suffering from eye discharge. It could be that they have allergies which cause their eyes to water or there could be something else which is irritating it. They could also have an infection such as conjunctivitis. Even if you can’t always see evidence of any discharge then there are other signs that your dog could have a problem with their eyes. This includes if they seem to be having trouble opening their eyes or if they seem to be pawing at them.

If the discharge is clear then there is not usually anything to worry about too much but it is always a good idea to consult a vet to check your dog over. The vet may prescribe some eyedrops or ointment that you can apply to your dogs eyes. The following tips can help you when you are treating your dog for eye discharge.

  • Clean as much discharge away from around your dog’s eyes as you can using warm water and cotton wool.
  • If you are using eye drops then you will need to tilt the dog’s head back slightly. If you rest your hand on the dogs head you can avoid poking his eye with the dropper if he were to move. You should aim the drops for the upper part of the dog’s eye.
  • Applying ointment can be a little more tricky as it has to be applied directly onto the eye. The best place to apply it is under the lower kid and so you will need to gently pull this down. You should rest your hand on the dog’s head again so that you don’t knock him with the applicator if his head moves.
  • Whether you have applied eyedrops or ointment you will need to ensure this is spread around the whole eye. The easiest way to do this is to gently open and close their eye lids as if they were blinking.

If you think that your dog may not react well to either of these treatments then it may be useful if you have someone else with you to help. Even just someone to hold your dog’s head still can be a huge help.

If the eye discharge is caused by an underlying condition then the vet may suggest other forms of treatment. This actual treatment will depend on the condition that your dog has but the vet will go through everything with you. There are some conditions that can only be treated with surgery but this will only be done if it is absolutely necessary.

There are also some steps that you can take to prevent eye discharge occurring in your dog. Long hair can sometimes irritate the eye and this can be avoided by having your dog groomed on a regular basis. You should also avoid contact with anything that could irritate the eyes such as shampoo or flea treatments. If you have any concerns about the discharge from your dog’s eyes then you should consult a vet as this can sometimes be a symptom of a more serious condition.
