10 Reasons Dogs are Better than Having a Best Friend

Dogs are probably the coolest animals on the planet, and sometimes they are far cooler than people. No, wait; dogs are always cooler than people. Dogs are loving, kind, friendly and they really do make amazing friends. That’s not to say that our own friends are not good enough for us, it’s just to say that dogs are usually a lot less dramatic, a lot less annoying and a lot more loving. We love our human BFFs, but we also love our doggie BFFs, too, and that’s why sometimes we’re pretty certain dogs outweigh people in all the categories that really matter. Read on to find out why we think that dogs are better than people.
They don’t talk
This is not to say that I don’t love listening to my friends talk to me. It’s just that sometimes I do become a little bit tired of hearing the same stories over and over again. The same, “I hate this and that and whatever,” and yet no one takes anyone else’s advice or tries to change the situation. They just whine about it forever and you have to listen to it all the time knowing that every conversation you have with that particular person is going to end up on that track (by the way, these are called toxic people, get rid of them).
They have a short-term memory
That one time you forgot your friend’s birthday and you’re probably still hearing about what a crappy friend you are? Yeah, your dog forgot that you forgot his, so it’s cool. He actually forgot it was his own birthday, so all is well in his doggie-mind. What this means for you is that you will never have to worry that your dog is going to be mad at you. He’s not. He doesn’t even care that you did or didn’t do something. He cannot hold a grudge, and that makes your relationship so much better being that you’re so perfectly imperfect (more imperfect, right?).
They listen well
Dogs listen like it’s their job. Sure, they might not understand the words that are coming out of your mouth, but they do get that something is coming out of your mouth and they want to be there for you. They don’t talk back, interrupt or make you feel as if they are not interested. They also don’t check texts and emails in the middle of you conversation either, and that’s super nice.
They don’t judge
You can tell your dog that you drunk dialed your ex three times this week even though you said you’d never do it again, and he doesn’t call you a name. He doesn’t care. He doesn’t do anything but listen to you, love you and want you to pet him and maybe take him for a walk. He loves you. He will always love you. As long as your poor decision making skills do not affect his walks and meals, he’s not judging you. To your face.
They keep you alive longer
It’s a proven fact that dog owners are far more likely to live years longer than those of us without dogs. That means that you’re going to live longer – really, it’s that simple. Your friends, well, are they allowing you to live longer? Does every margarita your girlfriend pour you provide you with another year to your life? My guess is not so much. Though friends make us happy and happy people tend to live longer, too.
They make sure you exercise
Your dog doesn’t give you much room not to let you exercise. Your dog does not allow you to skip walks because you are too tired or lazy or whatever. So basically, what you get is this; a dog that is forcing you to walk so that you have to get some exercise so that you are healthier, better looking, more confident and prone to a bit of a longer life, a more productive immune system and all that.
They love you not matter what
You can look however you want, do whatever you want and be whatever you want, and your dog is going to love you for it without any questions being asked. It’s just something that you get to have in your life, and there is nothing that anyone will ever be able to do to mimic that.
They’re cheaper than your friends’ at the holidays
It’s a true story. We love our friends, but animals would be a much cheaper alternative. Animals don’t need bottles of wine, dinners out, presents and the like – a new box of bones and a chew toy will be just fine in their opinion. Actually, dogs don’t even know that holidays exist, so they’re probably not even going to notice if you don’t get them anything. But, friends are more fun to enjoy holiday parties with, so there is that one.
They’re smart
Dogs are so smart that it is not even funny. You can teach them to do things like shake your hand and fetch things like the remote or a new drink or a blanket. Your friends are not likely to get up from their seats and grab the remote on your behalf. It’s just not something that they’re going to do. Dogs are definitely going to do that for you, though, and that makes them the clear winner in this particular situation.
They’re attuned to your emotions
Dogs know what you are feeling. They can sense when you are not how you should be, or not what you should be. Your friends, well, sometimes they can tell, but they are often so consumed with their own lives that they forget to notice that you have one of your own. They might not notice right away that you are not feeling all right or that something is off. Your dog, though, is going to notice this right away, and it’s going to make all the difference in your life
