Did you know that mother dogs bond with their pups through the sense of smell?  This explains why it may be bad to separate pups from their mother.  In fact, depending on the smelling capabilities of the breed, some mother dogs might not even recognize her own children.

According to one study, it’s the maternal instinct which also makes female dogs more sociable than males. Dogs were presented with three, treat-filled boxes, only two of which could be opened on their own. The female dogs were far more likely to “ask” a researcher for help than males.
