Dogs are from all over the world, and many of them are from England. Sometimes it seems as if it’s easy to tell which dogs are from which area based on their names. For example, we know that the English Bulldog is from England thanks to its name, though some breeds are not quite so easily named for their location. English dogs are not particularly different from dogs that originate from other areas of the world. However, they do seem to be among the oldest breeds around. Read on to find out which breeds are from England.

airedale terrier

Airedale Terrier

Nicknamed the “King of Terriers” this dog is the largest of the terrier breed. It comes straight from the United Kingdom, which should make it a very royal dog, should it not? With a name like Airedale Terrier, there is no denying the fact that this certainly sounds like a royal dog. Maybe the Duke and Duchess will consider one for their new little children and call it a very royal dog.

Beagle

Most people are unaware of the fact that the Beagle comes from England. It’s such an American dog, starring in so many American shows and movies. However, it’s an English dog. If only dog’s barks had the same kind of accent as the voices of those who live in certain countries. Then we’d all know exactly where certain dogs hail and we’d never be confused about their origins ever again. Either way, though, this sweet little dog is an English breed.

cavalier

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

This is one of the most popular dogs in the world, as well as one of the sweetest. This little dog has the biggest eyes, the floppiest ears and the sweetest expression you will ever see, and that makes it impossible to deny that this dog deserves some serious love. It was made famous when King Charles the II way back in the 17th century developed a love affair for the breed and decided that it would become illegal to ban these dogs from any public place so long as he was in command. We don’t blame him; they’re very cute.

English Cocker Spaniel

With a name like “English” cocker spaniel, this one was a pretty easy call. However, sometimes it seems that dogs are given names that make them sound as if they are from one place when they are really from another, so this one could have been a trick question. It’s not. The English Cocker Spaniel is as English as they get. In fact, when I think of England, I picture this breed in my mind in an unofficial capacity as the mascot of the United Kingdom. Well, right after Kate Middleton.

french bulldog

French Bulldog

So it’s called French, but it is not. This dog was born and bred in England, but it did not become a popular breed until people began migrating to France, where it was then given its current name. It’s a very interesting story if you have the time to look it up and read it, and it really does make you want to have a dog like this. Let’s just say that this dog was much loved by the ladies of the night. Working women, if you will. The kind of women who weren’t afraid to get out and pretty themselves up and make a few bucks for their families.

jack russell terrier

Jack Russell Terrier

This is the other dog, that in my own mind, just screams “England” with its looks and its history. Born and bred in the UK, this little dog is friendly, active and will give you a run for your money. They are eager to please, smart and very excited at all times, it seems. These dogs are sweet, even if they might have a bit too much energy for my taste, and they are all English all the way.

pitbull

Pit Bull Terrier

This is the breed with the worst reputation in the world. Right now, people are so against Pitbulls and the notion that they are aggressive dangerous dogs that are out for blood at all times. Sure, there are dogs like that from this particular breed, but it has a lot more to do with the poor ownership and training they are given by some pathetic people than it does the breed itself. But what often surprises people is that this breed hails straight from across the pond. Since the English are often thought of as more refined and calm, it tends to surprise people that the breed they find so ‘evil’ is actually English in origin.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkie is a sweet dog. It’s small and adorable, and it’s very playful. Watch out for this dog, though, because he likes to be very close to his loved ones, and he’s got a serious jumping bean issue. He wants to be eye level with you at all times, and he loves to launch himself at people. My mother-in-law’s Yorkie is in love with jumping up in front of our kids and making eye contact with them, which they and the dog all love to pieces. This never fails to end in a fit of giggles that makes everyone smile. So in short, this is a great dog for slightly older kids. Our 15-month-old twins find him far less amusing.

The pointer is a very loyal and hardworking dog, but it’s also a dog that is very active. What this means is that you need ample time to ensure that your dog has time to run around and play, to spend time with you in the great outdoors. It needs a lot of exercise to keep it happy, and it’s not the kind of dog that can sit around doing nothing for any amount of time. It’s loyal and very affectionate, but it’s also going to make you crazy if you’re not that active.
