Corgis Are the Most Popular Dog of 2019, But Why?

Dog breeds come in and out of fashion as trends and people’s lifestyles change. There are also differences in the popularity of breeds based on location. Back in 2008, Welsh Corgis were only the 24th most popular breed in the United States. However, this breed has seen a significant surge in their popularity. According to the American Kennel Club, this breed had risen up the ranks to 13th position in 2018, and it is now topping the list of the most popular breed among Americans. So, why has the Welsh Corgi become so popular. The Welsh Corgi, often referred to simply as a Corgi, is a small herding dog that originates from Wales. Its history dates back as far as the 10th century. There are two separate breeds of Welsh Corgi; the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. The latter is the most common of the two breeds.

The smaller size of Welsh Corgis is one possible reason that they are now a popular choice. Smaller breeds are in fashion at the moment as people like to carry their dogs around with them. A smaller dog is also great for people who live in city center apartments as they are better suited to these living conditions than larger dogs. Despite their small size, their proportions are another appealing factor that may contribute to the breed’s current popularity, says New York Post. They are a sturdy and solid looking dog, despite their short stature. Their sturdiness is something that will appeal to many people.

First, many men prefer to keep bigger dogs as they believe that they are more manly. A Corgi is a great compromise because they have all the benefits of keeping a smaller dog breed, but also have a manlier appearance. There is also a trend for big butts now. This is something that a Corgi can boast because they have a rather rounded behind. A further reason for the popularity of Corgis is their link to the British royal family. It is a well-known fact that Queen Elizabeth II is a huge fan of Corgis and has bred these dogs throughout her life. She has regularly been snapped on one of her estates with multiple Corgis in tow. Many Americans are huge fans of the British royal family, so it is possible they want to emulate this aspect of their lifestyle. The theory being that if the breed is good enough for royalty, then it is good enough for them.

The royal connection has also influenced television, which has then influenced the popularity of the breed. The corgi has raised its profile in the media, and this is in part due to them being featured in series such as Netflix’s ‘The Crown’, which is inspired by the royal family. Corgis have also featured in multiple other television series, including the cult animated series ‘Cowboy Bebop’. In turn, the inclusion of Corgis in television series has also inspired multiple viral memes. One of the most famous of these is the clip featuring Antoni Porowski of ‘Queer Eye’ fame freaking out over corgis. In that meme, Porowski talks about them having little baby paws that smell like pup-peroni.

Darren Carlin is a 31-year-old coder who lives in Putnam Valley, New York, with his seven-year-old Corgi George. Carlin has talked about the huge influence that online memes have had on the popularity of the breed. He says that when he first got George as a pup, he hardly ever saw anyone else with a Corgi. As soon as memes began appearing online featuring the breed, he saw an increase in the number of people walking a Corgi. Now, Carlin says that he sees dozens of Corgis everywhere he goes.

The online influence goes far beyond a few viral memes though, and one of the biggest influencers is a man who doesn’t even own a dog. New York Corgis Facebook Page is run by 30-year-old Eric Ho. The page already has more than 3,800 followers. Ho also organizes monthly meetings for the breed and he attended an event called Corgi Con. Ho clearly seems very passionate about the breed, so it surprises many people to discover that he is not a Corgi owner himself. In fact, he doesn’t own a dog of any breed. Ho has explained that the breed resonates with him, but that he doesn’t feel ready to take on the responsibility of owning one himself.

The graphic designer first came across corgis when he was working for a graphic design company making and selling 3D printed memes. Ho came across a Corgi cosplaying Thor and designed a 3D meme based on this which went viral. Despite the growing popularity of this breed, there are some issues and it is important that potential Corgi owners are aware of these. They are prone to obesity, which can lead to them developing hip and joint problems. This means they must have regular exercise to prevent these issues. Another issue is that Corgis are prone to nipping and barking These are useful traits for herding dogs to have, but they can become very annoying in the home environment.

It is also important that those considering getting a Corgi understand that they are quite a high-maintenance breed. This is predominantly due to its thick coat. They have both a top coat and an undercoat, so they need lots of grooming and regular baths. Their thick coats also mean that they shed a lot, so you will spend plenty of time cleaning up hairs around your home.

Despite these issues, there are plenty of personality traits that make keeping a Corgi worthwhile. They make fantastic companions and they are extremely loyal. Corgis are also strong, sturdy, fierce and fearless dogs that aren’t afraid of anything. Many people find these appealing characteristics and would argue that Corgis are the best dog breed of them all.
