Five Popular Chihuahua Mixes You Should Consider

chihuahua

The designer dog is one that many people are willing to pay big bucks for, and it’s because they’re so cute and so in-demand. One could say they’re popular at the moment and that’s why so many people are willing to spend so much on dogs that were once considered mutts. More than a decade ago, a Chihuahua mixed with another dog would be considered a mutt and it’s something you could get free of charge at the pound, the kennel, and the shelter or from the neighbor without a second thought. Today, however, Chihuahua mixes are some of the most popular designer dogs in the world. Known as hybrids, these dogs are selectively bred with other dogs of other breeds to create new breeds that are recognized by some associations and not by others. If you are considering a Chihuahua, you might want to consider one of these five very popular hybrid breeds – mixes – to add to your family member.

Chihuahua-Terrier Mix

At some point in the 90s, someone had the bright idea to mix a rat terrier with a Chihuahua to create a designer breed known as this. It’s one of the most popular mix breeds in the world, and many people are willing to pay a lot of money for this breed. While it’s still a fairly new dog, there are very few details we can share with you in terms of disposition or temperament. These puppies come from very strong, dominant parents and they can take on the personality traits of either or of both. Some are said to be much like the Chihuahua and some are said to be very much like the terrier. It all depends on the breed and the kind of parents to which it was born. Yours could be very much like a terrier or it might not be; it all depends and there is no way to really know for certain until the dog is grown and you know it well.

Pitbull-Chihuahua Mix

Known most often as a ChiPit, this is certainly not the breed for everyone. If you want to know what this breed is going to grow up to be like, you should learn all you can about the American Bull Terrier and the Chihuahua and understand it could be anything like any of them. Both dogs have strong personalities that can make them difficult to live with if they’re not properly trained and taught correct obedience. Many people assume that the pitbull is a dangerous dog with an aggressive nature, but this is only true of owners who breed and raise their dogs improperly – and those who have medical issues that leave them unable to function at their full capacity. This can be a wonderful mix to bring home if you have the time and dedication to teach the dog how to behave and bring it up the way it’s supposed to be brought up.

Pomeranian-Chihuahua Mix

Frequently called a PomChi, this dog is a great one to have. Depending on the dog you get and the dominant genes in its parents, you might end up with one that looks a lot more like a Pomeranian or you might end up with one that looks like a fuzzy Chihuahua. You could also end up with one that’s a nice mixture of both. You just don’t know until you get there to get your dog, however. As far as temperament goes, they can be very playful and very sweet. They can also be a bit hyperactive according to many owners, but this is just natural of two dog breeds like this. This is a breed that could act like either/or. It’s not something you can predict, but you can modify behavior and train your dog with some appropriate obedience techniques and a firm but pleasant manner of teaching the dog to listen and obey.

Pug-Chihuahua Mix

Chug; it’s the name of this mix. It’s funny, the dog is funny and the whole thing is funny in a very sweet way. Imagine a pug with the face of a Chihuahua and that’s probably what you’re going to end up with. The vast majority of these dogs tend to have this look and it’s very sweet. It’s sort of the best of both worlds in terms of what the dog gets from its parents, and it makes a wonderful pet for those who do not have kids or other animals at home. And before those who own this dog become upset at that, saying their chugs are just wonderful with kids and other animals; it’s entirely possible. However, according to many breeders, this is just not the way it is with all of these animals. They’re considered very territorial, very aggressive to bigger dogs, and very cat friendly. It can also be a very protective dog, and probably much better suited to older children and adults.

Yorkie-Chihuahua Mix

Called a Chorkie, this is a sweet little mix, and probably the most popular of the Chihuahua mixed breeds. The good news about this mixed breed is that it’s not considered to inherit the worst of the Chihuahua. While those are dogs that are sometimes very loud, very aggressive and very difficult to deal with for many, this mix is not like that at all. In fact, most breeders and owners have said that their chorkies are as friendly as any other dog in the world with few of the Chihuahua characteristics that so many people don’t appreciate. It’s a wonderful family dog so many people look forward to bringing home and calling their own. The Chorkie has been popular since the 90s when the trend of owning very small dogs became a big thing.

It’s said to be a very pleasing animal that will do whatever it takes to gain approval from its owners and people, which makes it very easy to trains. It’s the kind of dog that has a very good temperament and a very pleasing attitude. It rarely does anything upsetting.
