Kindness of a Stranger Helps Brazilian Woman and Adopted Pup

Every once in awhile, we are reminded that there are still good people left in this world. Things don’t always have to be filled with drama or cruelty. Sometimes it’s hard to remember such things, especially in a world where you can’t open a newspaper or turn on the news without hearing about some type of atrocity that is happening to someone, somewhere across the globe. Sometimes those atrocities happen right in our own backyard. The good news is that without a doubt, there is still good left in this world. If you don’t believe that, all you need to do is keep reading and find out more about the heartwarming story that’s about to be told. It just might restore your faith in humanity. If you’re a bit of the emotional type, it might even bring a tear or two to your eye.

The story began when a woman named Maria adopted a cute little dog from a shelter. She had just moved into her own apartment and she found it a bit lonely there all by herself. She thought that adopting a dog would be the perfect solution. It would give her a chance to feel less lonely and she had the opportunity to rescue an animal that had been previously unwanted and would almost certainly be put down if someone didn’t come and take him in. She ended up with a cute little dog, black in color was just a tuft of white on his chest. The two of them fell in love almost immediately and things seemed like they were really looking up for both of them.

Of course, most people have to work outside of their homes in order to pay the bills and for Maria, that was indeed the case. The problem was that when she left the little dog, named Chips, to go to work he would cry and cry, howling all day for her to come back home. Clearly, he was in a great deal of distress. As it turns out, the little dog was suffering from separation anxiety, a condition that causes dogs to panic and become extremely agitated when their owners are not by their sides. it isn’t really all that surprising that Chips suffered from separation anxiety, especially when you consider the fact that he was adopted from a shelter. Shelter animals are some of the greatest companions that you could ever hope to have, but many of them have been abandoned by their owners or suffered some other type of tragedy that landed them there in the first place. It only stands to reason that when they develop a strong bond with another person and then that person walks out the door, they have the fear that once again, they will end up alone.

Remember, Maria lives in an apartment building. Most apartments are known for having notoriously thin walls and she was understandably worried when she would come home and hear her dog howling and crying. She began to fear that her neighbors might become angry with her, especially because she had just moved into the building and didn’t really yet know anyone there. This is where things took a turn for the better. One day she did arrive home and she found a package at her door. She could hear Chips crying inside and when she opened the package, there were a bunch of dog toys inside along with one of the sweetest letters that she could possibly imagine.

The letter had been written as if it were penned by one of the dogs who lived next door. It talked about how that dog understood that Chips was suffering when his person wasn’t there, offering a gift of dog toys in hopes of easing his anxiety. That in and of itself was sweet enough, but the letter also went on to say that Chips could come over and play with the other dog anytime. That’s right, a woman named Nichole, who owns the dog that had “written” the letter, was opening up her home to a complete stranger’s pet and offering an entire box of dog toys, all to ease the anxiety that both Maria and Chips were undoubtedly feeling. If that doesn’t warm your heart, you may want to check your pulse.

When you stop and think about it, this neighbor could have reacted in a much different manner. In fact, any of the neighbors there could have made a complaint about Chips crying all day long and that could have forced Maria to either move out or make the heartbreaking decision to relinquish Chips, effectively breaking two hearts in the process. Instead, the other neighbors remained quiet and this one stepped up and made an offer of friendship that was pure gold. As it turns out, her own dog had also suffered from separation anxiety and she knew how difficult it could be for both the owner and the animal. Nicole and Maria quickly became friends and she started to give Maria a few pointers considering ways to make Chips more comfortable, even when she had to be out of the house.

If you have a soft spot in your heart for animals and you’ve been through this with a dog that you love, you know how hard it can be to hear them crying when you walk out the door, knowing that you have no recourse but to keep going. After all, you do have to pay the bills. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be that way. Just as Nichole helped Maria, there are ways that you can help your dog if he or she has separation anxiety. Consider making one of the smaller bedrooms in the home your dog’s designated room when you’re away. Sometimes being in a smaller area makes it easier to relax. You might also want to put on some soft music for your dog, make sure they have plenty of toys and a favorite blanket, and pull the blinds so it’s darker and more peaceful in the room. You can also give them an old sock or a t-shirt, preferably something that you have worn and have not yet washed. This will help your dog feel closer to you when you’re away.

There’s no doubt that the story about Maria and Chips is one that everyone can learn something from. Sometimes, it’s easy to lash out at people because of our own frustrations but if we can remember to offer a helping hand instead, there is a possibility for everyone be all the better because of it.
