This Rescue Dog’s Children’s Book Helps Other Dogs In Need

DD Dog

We already know that dogs are special creatures. However, rescue dogs are especially deserving of our attention. Considered the orphans of the animal world, these precious dogs are often neglected and abandoned through no fault of their own. As a humane society, we have an obligation to take care of them and help them to find a loving home in which they can thrive. This is often easier said than done, however, as there are just not enough of those families to go around. Part of the problem is also access to information. The general public simply does not understand the gravity of the problem, nor do they know what they can do to help. That is why it is also wonderful to read about a new program or initiative that has made some positive progress. One of those recently occurred in the form of a rescue dogs’ book for children. This has really benefited the rescue dog population by helping animals in need. Let us recount the details for you now.

The Story

Jill McGlaughin is at the center of this story. She is a person who loves dogs, but she never considered herself to be much of a writer. You might wonder what the two have to do with one another, but that is where this story begins. She once encountered a rescue dog that she took into her own family. She would name the dog DD. Over time, she realized how special DD was and realized that this was a story that she needed to share with the world. It happened four years ago when the family was on a holiday in Mississippi. They had a wonderful time, but throughout the trip, DD would follow them everywhere. The family really became attached to this special animal and knew that they could not just leave him behind. It did not take much convincing for the entire family to adopt DD into their mix, and that is where the dog now happily lives.

As she tells the story, they were just about to leave their vacation in Mississippi, but DD was not in their plans to bring home. That is the way it often is with rescue dogs. This is not the fault of the family in the least. It is a big responsibility to take on a new pet. You must be ready for the animal in order to provide it the love and care that it deserves. Anything less than that is not fair to the dog. That is the dilemma that many rescue dogs face. There are many people out there who love them, but few are also able to take care of them. At the same time, many others simply do not think about bringing the dog home. It is not something that most of us are actively looking for. Thankfully for DD, this was not the case with the McGlaughin family.

The Happy Ending

In this case, the family started to leave and noticed that DD was following right behind their car. That is enough to pull at the emotional strings on anyone, but particularly Jill and her family. They loved dogs and they had already grown fond of DD. They knew straight away once the dog started following them that there was no way they could return to the home in Virginia without him. They immediately decided as a family that they were ready to take on the responsibility of raising DD and including him full heartedly into their family. They stopped the car, welcomed DD in, and the rest is history.

As soon as they got home to Virginia, they took the dog to the vet to see what was needed. In addition, the vet checked to see if there was another owner for DD. There was not. DD was truly an orphan and now had found a home with the McLaughlin family. He is a happy and healthy dog now. When they first encountered DD, he was literally starved for food. He was obviously neglected and his weight was very low. The family just could not envision leaving him alone. They slowly took it upon themselves to nurse him to full health. For his part, DD has responded quite well at his new home.

The Story Gets Published

Jill wanted others to hear this story. She knows that there are many more stray dogs out there just like DD that deserve a loving home as well. She started by posting the details on Facebook. Her family and friends all became captivated by it and they were encouraged to then share the same story with their own family and friends. It went viral, as they say, and that spawned the idea of Jill actually writing a book. She would begin working on it in her spare time. It took two years, but DD’s Miracle was finally published. It is a book written for children. She donates all of the proceeds from the book to several non-profit animal shelters in both Mississippi and Virginia. The simple act of writing this book has also inspired others to do the same. Drawing attention to the plight of stray dogs around the country is a worthy cause indeed.

Jill hopes that the book continues to sell well and that the money can really help many dogs find the families that they deserve.
