18. Bernese Mountain Dog
The Bernese Mountain dog hails from the farmlands of Switzerland and was bred for working. They were used as herding, protection, and cart pulling jobs, and are just one of four Swiss type Mountain dog breeds. This is the only version of the four, however, that sports long hair. These dogs have very good dispositions. They are very loyal and gentle natured with a calm demeanor. They make great protection dogs, but they do need to be trained and well socialized, especially due to their large size. They do make great pets but are not for everyone. They are not the best breed for first time dog owners, those who live in an apartment, or live in a high heat climate.
