The Job is not a “Cute” One

Perhaps you imagine doggie day care as a lovely field of green grass, meadows filled with flowers and sunshine and rainbows all day long. But that would make you really, really wrong. The job is not, to be quite honest, cute. It’s hard work. It’s a real job. If these people were not there doing their jobs, you would have nowhere to put Fido while you go to work or travel the world. So stop calling people who work at the doggie daycare cute and start thanking them for putting up with your animal all day long – as well as dozens of others.

Doggie Daycare is a lot like High School

Did you know that dogs form cliques? I mean, I did not have a clue, nor did I ever think about it or care to think about it. However, it’s right. It’s true and it’s the life that people live. These dogs have real cliques and they’re not always nice to other dogs. They’re not always appropriate, and they are not always able to make sure that people are being treated fairly. The people who work here are forced to make sure that animals in the dog pound are not treating others poorly.

The Hair

The people who work here during the day caring for your animals could have their own collection of doggie fur coats by the end of the day. The struggle is real, and the people who work here really have an issue if they decide to start a family and the kid they give birth to has a dog fur allergy. I mean, it happens and it’s a real struggle. Dogs shed, and these people take home the vast majority of what your dogs leave behind each and every day.

The Smell

Need we go on? Imagine being with nothing but a dozen dogs all day long and how that must smell. They’re all over you. You have to take them out. You have to clean them. You have to clean up after them. The smell is so real and so bad that you can singlehandedly clear out a line at the supermarket simply because no one wants to be anywhere within a certain proximity of your stench. See, it’s not all fun and games.

Doggie Stampedes are Real

The gate. The gate. The gate. It’s like the dogs wait all day long for the gate to open so that they can make their way to the gate so that they can make their way outside. They all know they’re going out and that they are getting a chance to run around and have fun, but the idea of being in the back of the line for even just a second is just unbearable. These people are put in harm’s way every single time they open the gate to let these dogs out. They act like they’ve never been outside before.

Cleaning is not Fun

While you think that there is a lot of fun and wonderful happiness that goes on in doggie daycare, you will never understand that it’s not all like that. In fact, according to doggie daycare people, the vast majority of the day is spent cleaning up poo and other disgusting things that dogs tend to do throughout the day. Think about it; if you were home with the dog, what would you be doing all day long? Now multiply your one dog by dozens and see what happens.

Fetch is Not your Favorite Game

Every single day these people go home with a sore arm from the number of times they’ve thrown a ball or a stick or a Frisbee or some other piece of equipment to a dog. They do it all the time, and it never gets old that their arms hurt. Of course, they do have some killer definition and muscle in their throwing arm after a few weeks of this. But that doesn’t make up for the looks of the other arm that doesn’t get that kind of exercise.

The Eating and the Rolling is Gross

You know how dogs are always in their own poo exploring it and wanting to see what’s up with it? Now imagine that there is doggie do all over the ground that does not belong to your dog. Before the doggie daycare workers can do their job, which is to clean it up, there are dogs all over it about to take a whiff and a roll, and it’s gross. And if they manage to succeed, guess who is forced to clean the dogs and the mess after that? The job is far from glamorous.

Showers are Necessary

There is never, ever a day in which the people who daycare sit your dogs are able to run out and grab a drink with friends after work. In fact, they have to first go home, shower and even wash their hair before they can partake in any such activity considering the fact that they reek like dogs and all the things that are associated with dogs. There are no friends who want to go out with these people immediately after a shift. It’s just not something they consider fun or even remotely worth it in any way.

No one wants the Small Dogs

There are certain rooms in a doggie daycare, just like at a child’s daycare. The smaller dogs are all kept together. And guess what? No one is going to tell you that they dread having to spend time in this room. Small dogs are, by nature, spoiled rotten and typically allowed to do whatever they want at home, so they get away with a lot. This makes for a lot of work and a really long day for those who have to go into this room and spend time with these small dogs for an entire day.

If they Love your Dog, they Love You

Chances are really good that if you have a well-mannered, smart and intelligent dog, people that work at the doggie daycare are really going to love you. I don’t mean that they are going to love you and appreciate you just because you bring in a good pet. I mean that they secretly want to be your friend. They want to strike up a real friendship with you so that they can come over and play with you and your dog and be your friend and stop obsessing over how cool you and your dog really are.

You have a lot of Photos of Dogs that Aren’t Yours

Maybe that might be creepy if you were like a child’s teacher or something, but it’s actually totally normal when you are the teacher of the dogs. These are animals that have a lot of love and affection, and the people that are taking care of your dogs during the day are certainly taking a lot of photos of them. In fact, you might not be surprised to see a photo of your dog on someone else’s social media feed because they love it so much.

You take a lot of Selfies with Other People’s Animals

Yes, if you take a lot of selfies with your own dog, imagine what the people who work for the doggie daycare are doing with your dog. Their phones are filled with selfies of them and the dogs that belong to others because they do love them so much. It’s not weird. It’s work.

Expect dogs to Come home Dirty

When a daycare worker is yelled at because someone is unhappy with the fact that their dog came home dirty, it’s not a favorite. In fact, these people would like for you to remember that it’s their job to keep your dog happy, healthy and taken care of throughout the day. It is not their job to keep them clean. If they had to bathe the dogs, they’d never get anything else done, and that’s not awesome.

Some Dogs eat Better than People

It’s kind of sad when the snacks that people send for their dogs are kind of better than the snacks that they came with for the day. It’s just one of those things. It happens. And actually, it happens to people all the time. My husband likes to say that our kids have better school lunches than he does when I’m packing their lunches for them each day. But of course, he can pack his own amazing lunch or buy one if he really wants to, so I fail to see how this is my issue.

They don’t Like Untrained Dogs

If you bring in an untrained dog to doggie daycare, expect that the people who work there will kind of dislike you a lot. They are not trainers, and their job is not to work with your dog to learn new tricks or basic commands. Their job involves a lot of dogs that already know these things, so do yourself and the people you pay to watch your dogs a favor; teach them to properly and correctly obey the most basic of commands, at least.

The Dog that Likes to Get Frisky is the Worst

You know that this might be your dog. You know it. There’s always someone that has one of these dogs, and they seem to not care at all or not even notice in the least that their dog is all over everyone else’s dogs, their kids and their kids’ toys, and that’s so annoying. Now imagine what this is like at doggie daycare, where some people might have made the decision not to have their dogs fixed. It’s kind of a mess. It’s kind of gross, and no one wants to be responsible for that.

You will Quickly become a Daycare Least Favorite if you Stand at the Fence and talk to the Dogs

Yes, it’s annoying. Those of you that stand at the fence or the door refusing to leave and getting the dogs all excited are so annoying to doggie daycare workers. You’re like the parent that consistently brings your kids to school and then never leaves, bothering the other kids and interrupting the regularly scheduled programming. It’s not cool, please stop.

The Walk is Leverage

You know how parents like to offer their kids a cookie or a special treat of some sort as leverage when they really, really need some sort of specific behavior to happen? Well, the walk is the doggie daycare equivalent of that for these workers. They like to wait until just the right moment when everyone is a little bit crazy and they need to take that and roll with it. It’s the same everywhere you go.

Daycare Employees are not Trainers

No, they are not. There is nothing that irritates a doggie daycare employee more than a person that believes that they are there to train their dogs. You need to send your dog to school for that. Daycare and school are not one and the same for dogs, according to many frustrated doggie daycare workers.
