Dog Spends Over a Year at Shelter: All Smiles Getting into Car with New Dad

For over a year, a sociable canine named Major patiently awaited adoption at the Naperville Area Humane Society. Despite his affectionate disposition and love for people, it remained unclear why no one seemed eager to provide him with a forever home.
The staff at the humane society were equally perplexed by the continued oversight of such a gentle and well-mannered dog.
“It was truly baffling to us why he hadn’t been adopted, as he is genuinely an exceptional dog,” remarked Kristen Funk, Executive Director of the Naperville Area Humane Society, in an interview with The Dodo. “Regrettably, I believe that when an animal spends an extended period in a shelter, people may assume there is an underlying issue. Major seemed to fall victim to this unfortunate stereotype.”

Major found pleasure in accompanying the humane society staff on walks and engaging in playtime with his fellow canines at the shelter. However, the absence of a loving family left a void in his life. The Naperville staff experienced a growing sense of sorrow as the days passed, observing their cherished canine, who had become a fixture in their office, still lacking a permanent home.
“It was quite challenging for all of his admirers here,” Funk expressed. “Major was held in high regard by both staff and volunteers, so witnessing the lack of interest in him day after day was disheartening.”

Fortuitously, Major’s circumstances took a positive turn one day when the humane society received a phone call from Jose, a semi-trailer truck driver. Mourning the loss of his previous canine companion whom he had adopted years prior, Jose sought a new friend to accompany him on his travels. Recognizing the potential for a perfect match, Funk immediately knew which dog to introduce to Jose.
“We were certain that Jose had to meet Major,” Funk stated.
In a short span of time, Major was confidently leaving the shelter alongside his new owner. As the pair climbed into the truck, the overjoyed dog, now at last adopted, could not suppress his exuberant grin.
“We were all smiles and happy tears over here — and still are!” Funk said.
Presently, Major takes pleasure in accompanying his owner on journeys across the nation and shares heartwarming moments of affection with him each night.
“We are delighted to learn that Major is relishing his adventurous life on the road,” Funk shared. “For a dog who always yearned for companionship, he has discovered an ideal scenario where he will perpetually be by the side of his beloved human.”
