In Savannah, Georgia, an adopted dog faced a health crisis, but thanks to the bravery of Carlton, a pit bull mix from Renegade Paws Rescue, the day was saved. Carlton selflessly donated blood to Breeze, the struggling dog, enabling them to undergo the vital surgery they desperately needed.
While Carlton is being hailed as a hero by the local community, he is still in search of a loving home. Renegade Paws Rescue in Savannah, Georgia, has Carlton available for adoption, offering a chance for someone to provide him with a forever family.
The selfless act occurred when Breeze, previously adopted from Renegade’s sister shelter, One Love, required an emergency blood transfusion to undergo intensive exploratory surgery. Breeze’s owner shared on Facebook that the dog was suffering from internal bleeding, prompting the need for immediate medical intervention.
Recognizing the urgency, Renegade’s director and co-founder, Jennifer Taylor, swiftly arranged for Carlton to be the perfect blood donor. Taylor expressed confidence in Carlton’s calm temperament, stating, “We knew that he’d be a good boy. Some dogs aren’t going to sit still while they draw a big syringe of blood. He’s just a really sweet puppy.”
The decision to select Carlton as the donor involved several health considerations, such as meeting the weight requirements for blood donation and testing negative for heartworm.
Through Carlton’s blood donation, Breeze’s red blood cell count was elevated, enabling veterinarians to identify the source of the internal bleeding successfully.
Breeze’s owner expressed deep gratitude on Facebook to Renegade Paws Rescue and the heroic dog, Carlton, for the life-saving gift of blood.
Both dogs recovered well from their procedures, with Carlton returning to his playful and energetic self. Taylor shared, “He was a little groggy that first day, but he’s actually really good now. He’s in good spirits, playing fetch in the yards, and having playgroups with his friends.”
After his donation, Carlton enjoyed a weekend sleepover with his brother, Anchor, at Anchor’s adoptive home, offering a respite from the shelter during his recovery.
Carlton and Anchor were rescued in December 2022 by a compassionate individual who discovered the puppies near one of Renegade Paws Rescue’s buildings. Taylor described the pups as “very, very skinny,” with Anchor having a significant wound. Shortly after their rescue, both dogs were placed in foster homes.
Despite Carlton’s sweet nature and friendly demeanor towards other dogs and people, he is still waiting for his forever home. Taylor attributes the challenges in finding him a permanent family to the difficulties faced by black pit bulls.
“It’s very hard to get them adopted here,” Taylor explained. “People are afraid of them, and there are a lot of stereotypes that go on where the pit bull breed is concerned.”
“If I didn’t have as many dogs as I have, I’d take him home,” Taylor added.
