Pit Bull Cannot Stop Smiling after Being Rescued from The Streets

Initially, Shortcake’s disposition was not as jubilant as it is now. Upon being discovered by an animal shelter, she was a stray in Fresno, California and had been afflicted with an extensive case of mange, resulting in an unpleasant odor reminiscent of decaying tissue.

Despite the severity of her condition, Shortcake demonstrated a valiant and amiable demeanor, as evidenced by her persistent sweet smile.

Shortcake’s persistent sweet smile proved to be a turning point, resulting in her rescue and eventual adoption by her current owner, Amy Matsushima. Under Amy’s loving care, Shortcake has been freed of her mange and is now able to fully enjoy her favorite pastimes of napping and playing with other dogs.

Remarkably, Shortcake maintains a perpetual grin, a testament to her current state of contentment. According to Amy, Shortcake is a lively and playful companion, often emitting various sounds that exemplify her exuberance. Furthermore, Shortcake’s unwavering smile is a defining characteristic that accompanies her through most of her waking moments.

Meet Shortcake. During her early days as a puppy, she endured a challenging existence as a stray in Fresno, California. Shortcake was plagued with both a severe case of mange and a hernia.

Fortunately, Shortcake’s plight was discovered by a nearby shelter that took her in. Shortly thereafter, Fresno Bully Rescue intervened and rescued her from the shelter, largely due to her distinct and endearing smile. It was at the rescue that Amy Matsushima came across Shortcake.

Recalling the experience, Amy explained that although Fresno Bully Rescue was operating at full capacity at the time, they could not resist Shortcake’s photograph and ultimately made the decision to take her into their care.

“She wasn’t in the best shape, as everyone that met her back then said that she smelled like rotting flesh due to her mange, but with the care of the rescue and her amazing foster family, she recovered quickly,” she said.

“I spent a lot of time online looking at shelters and rescues, and when I saw Shortcake’s picture, I could tell she was special,” she recalled.

“I made plans to meet her and drove up to Fresno from LA. Upon meeting her, she was small but full of personality, and I knew she was the one.”

Upon adopting Shortcake, Amy established an Instagram page to allow the rescue center to keep up with her development.

Notably, Shortcake has since been perpetually adorned with a cheerful smile, which is not merely limited to her appearances in front of the camera.

“She’s very silly, full of sounds, and playful when she’s not sleeping but even then, she smiles. She really does smile most of the time,” Amy said.

Now, at about 4 years old, Shortcake is seriously living the life. She gets plenty of naps and cuddles with her loving humans.

She has 130,000 followers on Instagram.

“‘It’s been great that she’s been able to bring joy to others, and to help spread awareness of the awesome dogs that can be found at your local shelter and rescue,” Amy said.

“Playing with other dogs and naps are definitely the two things that make her happiest, so hopefully soon I’ll be able to move into a bigger home and help out other dogs in need.”
