These days cross-breeds aka “designer dogs” are a very popular thing indeed. There are Labradoodles, cockapoos, lab mixes, husky mixes, you name it, you can probably find it somewhere. One of the best protection dogs among these designer canines is the Bullmastiff Pitbull Mix. But, it’s important to note that not all members of this cross-breed are created equal. What makes them unique, even unto each other, is the type of Mastiff and Pitbull that are bred to produce the breed.
Many people may not be aware of it, however, there are numerous Pitbull types and just as many Mastiff types. There are actually five specific Pitbull types that are the most common and they include the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Bulldog, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. And, as far as mastiffs go, their types include Argentinian, Brazilian, English, French, German, Italian, Neapolitan, Pyrenean, Spanish, Tibetan, Canary, Japanese, South African, Alangu, and Kangal Mastiffs. However, the just plain Bullmastiff is the best known and most popular.
So, when you mix any of them together, you get what is called an American Masti-Bull, a Pit Mastiff, or more correctly a Bullmastiff Pitbull Mix but not an American Bandogge as some people mistakenly call them. Since these designer dogs are so popular among dog-lovers, we found five things that most people probably don’t know about them, including:
1. Contrary to Popular Opinion, They’re Not Aggressive
Although Mastiffs are not feared by some people the way that Pit Bulls sometimes mistakenly are, neither of them is actually an overly aggressive breed. When you put them together, you get a big lovable and loving dog who sometimes may appear to be a bit sad and sleepy. Remember, more often than not, overly aggressive dogs are a result of aggressive people who make them that way, not their own nature.
2. They Love to Play Outside with Their Owners
The one thing that Pitbull Mastiff Mix dogs love the most is to spend plenty of quality time exercising with their owners. They love to take part in a variety of activities, including walking, running, going to play in the park, or just about any fun activity that you can possibly think of. And, like many dogs, if you live in an area that sees four seasons every year, they adore playing in the snow. In fact, we saw one on TV the other day who was copying his owner and making snow angels. Totes Adorbs!
3. They Make Great Guard Dogs
Because they come from parents who are superior guard dogs and very protective, the Pitbull Mastiff Mix will have an extremely protective nature. He will do anything he can to protect the people he loves the most in the whole world. This could lead to some barking issues, however, you should be able to properly train him not to bark at everything without making him feel that he shouldn’t be protective.
4. What About Training?
Well, since they inherit very strong personalities from both of their parents, Pitbull Mastiff Mix dogs are not necessarily the easiest to train. But, with a lot of patience and some dedication to his training, you should end up with a well-trained pooch, especially since they are really very smart and can learn quickly in spite of their somewhat stubborn nature. Remember, patience, love and rewards are the best training tools.
5. Coat Colors
Their coat colors can vary greatly based upon those of their parents. Generally, though, there are a few common colors to expect and they include black, white, brown, red, and brindle. In addition, a Pitbull Mastiff Mix can be more than just one color. Their coats can actually be a mixture of several of those common colors.
