What are the Coat Patterns of the Dapple Dachschund?

Dachshunds derive from Germany and are classified in the hound group. They were used for their ability to track scents and trail animals. Some Dachshunds can resemble that of the Terrier group, which typically have more wiry coats than that of the typical Dachshund. Over the years, breeders have used the Dachshund breed to hybrid with, in order to get the best qualities of the breed and match it with characteristics of other breeds. They are good natured and have a big personality. They like to entertain and be clowns and are very loyal to their owners. They love to be with you and please you. Dachshunds make great pets for families and for single people, including elderly people due to their easy maintenance, they are small, and friendly. Dachshunds do need to be socialized so that they learn to get along with other people and with other pets, if they will be around these types of situations, especially. The typical Dachshund dog will have a reddish, brown colored, short-fur coat, however, there are different color coats that are called Dapple coats. This means their coloring is “merle” like you would see in a collie dog. It is a color pattern and not a color, itself. Dapples can come in a variety of color combinations, and the following are the most common dapple colors.

1. Black and tan dapple

Compared to the black and tan smooth haired dachshund, the black and tan dapple breed of dachshund has longer hair and the colors are more speckled throughout the fur as opposed to patterned. Their fur is more silky and many will have a white chest and black nose.

2.  Black and cream dapple

Like the black and tan, the black and cream will have mostly black fur that is speckled with chunks of creams mixed in. Many black and cream colored dachshunds will have tan feet and a brown snout, and black nose. The fur on this type of the breed is also longer and softer than the smooth-fur type of the breed.

3. Blue and cream dapple

The blue and cream is speckled with blues, creams and may have some browns mixed in, especially around the feet. The blue can be smoky or very dark, and it may often be mistaken for black. Many times, this color combination can have smoky blue colored eyes and a cream to light brown snout and black nose.

4. Chocolate dapple

The chocolate dapple is a color combination of dark browns and lighter browns. It can resemble the colors of unmixed milk chocolate milk. The color combination may even exhibit some reddish tan chunks of fur, especially around the snout and feet. It is more common to see light to medium brown eyes with this color combination of dapple.

5. Chocolate and tan dapple

Chocolate and tan dapples may have more tan coloring with spotted amounts of chocolate mixed in. They may have more of the chocolate colorings around their feet and tails and it is common to see this coloring of the dapple with lighter colored eyes, from smoky to light blue. They are usually commonly seen with rose-colored noses too.

6. Silver dapple

The silver dapple will have mostly light silver fur that is the dominant color, with the secondary color being a darker silver to bluish color. The color combination is commonly seen with tan, cream colored feet, snout and eyebrows. The nose is typically black and the eyes are typically dark colored.

7. Red dapple

The red dapple is a combination of a dark red, almost rust color, with shades of darker spots mixed in. This is also a color combination that you will find in smooth-haired dachshunds as well as longer haired or wiry-haired types of the breed. A lighter colored chest is common with this color combination, sometimes appearing to be a tan color. The eyes on a red dapple are reddish to a brown color, and it will have a black nose.

8. Wild boar dapple

Wild boar dapple dachshunds are exactly as the color sounds; the colors resemble that of a wild boar with dark, “silverfish” gray and black tones are the primary color that has evenly mixed light tan tones. This is a color pattern that is typically found in a wiry haired dachshund. It is common to see tan feet, tan on the snout, dark eyes and black nose on this color combination dapple dachshund.

9.  Black and tan brindle dapple

The black and tan brindle dapple is similar to the black and tan, though this color combination is more patchy than the black and gray. The main color of the black and tan brindle is typically the tan color, with patches of black and reds mixed in throughout the body. It is also typical that the black and tan brindle will have a patchy snout with patches of red as well as lighter eyes, typically blue, and a rose-colored nose.

10. Blue and tan piebald dapple

The Blue and tan piebald dapple is not as speckled and evenly mixed in colors, but more, largely patched in color combinations. White can be the base color, with large patches of a blue color that car resemble a smoky gray. It is common to see a little tan in small amounts, typically on the face. The dog may have dark eyes, or blue. It may also have one of each and typically will have a black nose.
