The 10 Best Pit Bull Rescues in Maryland

Pit Bulls are seen in a negative light by a considerable portion of the population. As a result, they are at higher risk of being euthanized because they have lower chances of finding a new home.
If you think this is unfair, you have several ways you can help out. For instance, animal welfare organizations are working to educate the public about misunderstood dog breeds, which can always benefit from having more resources to work with.
Furthermore, you can adopt one of these Pit Bulls yourself. Something that should be more affordable than buying a dog from a trustworthy dog breeder.
Here are ten of the best Pit Bull rescues in Maryland:

10. Maryland SPCA – Baltimore, MD
SPCA is a popular name for an animal welfare organization. As a result, the Maryland SPCA isn’t a branch of something bigger. Instead, it is a local animal welfare organization that has been in operation since 1859.
Generally speaking, if you want to adopt a Pit Bull, you should check for the existence of a local SPCA or Humane Society. They might not have Pit Bulls. Even so, they should be able to point you in the right direction.

9. Key to Lion’s Heart Rescue – Derwood, MD
Key to Lion’s Heart Rescue is an excellent example of the kind of places you should check out. One of its primary functions is accepting animals from problematic situations before making them available for adoption by interested individuals. It doesn’t have a central facility. That means it relies on a network of foster volunteers to care for its charges.

8. Furever Safe – Hughesville, MD
Similarly, Furever Safe is another animal rescue that operates without a central facility. You don’t necessarily have to interpret this as a bad thing. A foster volunteer tends to provide a much more home-like environment than what more formal facilities can offer. Thanks to that, dogs will become more accustomed to such circumstances, which should make for a smoother transition to their forever homes.

7. Last Chance Animal Rescue – Waldorf, MD
Last Chance Animal Rescue specializes in accepting animals from high-kill animal shelters, which explains much about its name. Its location puts it in an excellent position to help throughout the National Capital Region. Indeed, Last Chance Animal Rescue claims to accept animals from 12 states, meaning it possesses incredible reach.

6. Rude Ranch – Harwood, MD
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Rude Ranch does have a central facility. Otherwise, its name would be rather strange. Regardless, Rude Ranch is another animal welfare organization that takes in animals that would otherwise be euthanized.
As such, you should check out its adoptable animals to see if you want one of them. It has a no-kill policy. Still, there is no shortage of animals that can benefit from the freed-up resources.

5. PB Proud – Largo, MD
Largo is in Prince George’s County. That matters because the latter has a Pit Bull ban. Enforcement is patchy, meaning some residents continue to own Pit Bulls anyway. In any case, PB Proud exists to protect Pit Bulls and Pit Bull owners.
It works towards this end through several methods. Unsurprisingly, taking in Pit Bulls is one of them. However, PB Proud is involved in everything from public education to providing services to low-income Pit Bull owners. Ultimately, it desires nothing less than the repeal of the Pit Bull ban in Prince George’s County.

4. Pits and Rotts For Life Rescue – Randallstown, MD
Pit Bulls aren’t the only dog breeds to suffer from an undeservedly poor reputation. Thanks to that, it isn’t uncommon to see animal welfare organizations working to protect Pit Bulls and other dog breeds in similar situations. For instance, this animal rescue focuses on American Pit Bull Terriers and Rottweilers. That said, it sometimes takes in mixed-breed dogs labeled one or the other without being one or the other.

3. Mid-Atlantic Bully Buddies – Baltimore, MD
Mid-Atlantic Bully Buddies relies on foster volunteers to take care of its charges. Unsurprisingly, most of its foster volunteers come from Greater Baltimore, though some live further out. Chances are good that interested individuals can guess most of its charges also come from shelters in the region.

2. Pitties and Purrs – Baltimore, MD
This animal rescue is similar to more than one of the other organizations mentioned on this list. After all, it is one more foster-volunteer-reliant animal rescue on the smaller end of things, which makes sense because a Pit Bull rescue’s more focused nature means it is drawing upon a smaller supporter base.
That said, this animal rescue does stand out in that it dedicates more or less the same amount of effort into caring for cats that it does into caring for Pit Bulls. It is difficult to make generalizations about Pit Bulls because the label doesn’t indicate a universally agreed-upon collection of dog breeds.
Even so, the general thought is that Pit Bulls are perfectly capable of getting along with cats so long as they have been properly socialized. That said, most sources claim results are best when socialization happens at a young age.

1. Kennel to Couch – Bel Air, MD
Personal experience is one of the best ways to dispel harmful stereotypes. In the case of Kennel to Couch, the founders adopted a Pit Bull who departed too soon, which is why they decided to start working for the well-being of similar dogs.
This animal rescue does so through much the same methods as its counterparts. One, it takes in Pit Bulls at risk of being euthanized before making them suitable for adoption by interested individuals.
Two, it offers education and other programs to Pit Bull owners and other members of the public. The first helps prevent potential complications. Meanwhile, the second push back at the negative aspects of the dog breeds’ image. Multi-faceted problems need multi-faceted solutions, meaning Kennel to Couch’s work is invaluable.
